    1874 (May 2): Great Britain 1873 1 s. green pl. 8, a single example used on 1874 mourning cover from Valparaiso to the German Consul in Caracas, Venezuela endorsed 'via Panama' tied by "C30" obliterator in black with 'Valparaiso' despatch cds (May 2) alongside. Found to be double weight as fully prepaid for single tariff, and struck with "INSUFFICIENTLY / + / PREPAID" in red. Three line dated PANAMA / TRANSIT in black (May 20) on front and reverse with 'St. Thomas' cds (May 28) where struck with "No. (5069) / DETAINED FOR POSTAGE (1/-)" with bracketed figures in manuscript. Presumably paid and sent on to Caracas. Some unsurprising edge wear to envelope, a most unusual cover.rnNote: The German Consul Erwin Stammann was a great critic of the Venezuelan President Guzman Blanco, calling him a despot and megalomaniac and Venezuela a “pitiful mestizo state”.

    'Pisagua' 1868 (Oct): Great Britain 1867 2 s. pale blue, lettered HD, used on 1868 green envelope believed to be from Pisagua (Chile) to Colchester endorsed 'Paid' and 'via Panama' tied by the famous "D65" obliterator in black. Reverse with Colchester arrival datestamp (Oct 28) in black. Small envelope imperfections and tone spot but this is the sole recorded cover from Pisagua with a 2 s. adhesive, and, whilst further Great Britain stamps have been found with the "D65" obliterator only one further cover has come to light since 1953.     1866 (Aug 11): Great Britain 1864 1 d. red pl. 92, a horizontal pair (CK-CL) and strip of four (BI-BL) used on 1866 cover from Guayaquil to Lima cancelled by four strikes of the "C41" obliterator wih double arc 'Guayaquil' datestamp of despatch below (Aug 12). Mailed during the 'Dispute Period' where the Ecuadorean P.O. attempted to insist that Ecuador adhesives and British adhesive stamps should be used, the British refused to comply as nearly all mail was transmitted by the PSNC. Reverse with Lima arrival cds (Aug 16).     1878 (May 16): Great Britain 1874 6 d. grey pl. 15, a horizontal strip of four used on 1878 cover from Guayaquil to Vera Cruz, Mexico cancelled by two fine strikes of the "C41" obliterator and also tied by three line dated PANAMA / TRANSIT in black (May 21). Reverse with double arc 'Guayaquil' datestamp of despatch (May 16) in black. A very rare destination for British P.O. in Guayaquil mail, the cover would have travelled via St. Thomas and then back to Vera Cruz.

The adhesives further tied by circular 'PD' in red and handstruck "2" accountancy marking applied in London. Barcelona arrival cds (July 2) with oval 'Cartero' delivery marking alongside.     1801 (Oct 20): Entire letter from Paramaribo to London written in Dutch by Governor Fredericks during the first year of British Occupation, struck on reverse with superb strike of two line "SURINAM / OCT 20 1801" datestamp in black. Faint oval "Ship Letter / ♚ / DEAL" in black on front panel and rated "6/-" to pay in manuscript. London arrival cds in red on reverse (Jan 21, 1802). A splendid and extremely rare entire with very few examples recorded.

    1867 (Oct 6): Peru 1862 Lecoq 1 d. pink (Scott 12) paying internal postage on 1867 cover from Tacna to London care of two Forwarding Agents with oval cachet of "C. Eulert / Arica" at upper left (Oct 8) and the second in Philadelphia, USA, overlapped by Great Britain 1858/79 1 d. red, pl. 85, three vertical pairs, the upper four stamps tied by "C36" Arica obliterators, the lower pair also cancelled in transit at Panama with "C35" to prevent re-use with further 'Panama' single ring transit cds (Oct 21) alongside. 'N.Y Steamship / 10' charge mark for incoming Ship Letter applied on arrival (Oct 31). The letter without further markings and presumably sent on under separate cover. Faults to one adhesive at base and heavy vertical file fold affects another at top but 1d. red. plate 85 is not recorded used from Arica by Stanley Gibbons.     1872 (Nov 9): Great Britain 1864 1 d. red pl. 138 single example and 1 d. red pl. 141 with a single and strip of four used on 1872 envelope from Arica to Greenock, Scotland cancelled by poor strikes of the "C36" obliterator and by single circle ARICA datestamp, reverse of opened for display cover showing 1858/69 2 d. blue pl. 13 in a block of six, this last overlooked at Arica and cancelled by the "C38" obliterator of Callao with cds alongside (Nov 14). The adhesives with minor scuffs and the block with one stamp with closed tear but a rare and most unusual cover.

    1865 (Sept 7): Peru 1862 Lecoq 1 d. pink (Scott 12) tied to cover front to Mainz, Germany by 'Arica' datestamp in black (Sept 7) used in combination with Great Britain 1864 1 d. red pl. 95, 1862 4 d. vermilion, hairlines, and 1865 1 s. green pl. 4 in a horizontal pair all tied by three bold strikes of the "C36" obliterator with double arc 'Arica' datestamps adjacent in black. 'London / Paid' cds (Oct 13) and oval 'PD' in red and thence via Aachen to Mainz. Edge wear at base but a rare usage of these adhesives - both the 1 d. red pl. 95 and the 4 d. vermilion are unlisted by Stanley Gibbons used in Arica, thus a proving piece.

Reverse with London transit (March 29) and Hamburg arrival over unusual 'Mercantile Bank of Peru' label. Found to be double weight upon arrival and struck with 'T' marking and charged '160' pfennigs due to pay in blue crayon.     1871 (Dec 17): Great Britain 1858/69 2 d. blue pl. 13 and 1867 3 d. rose pl. 6 with one vertical and two horizontal pairs (unlisted by Stanley Gibbons), used on Uruguay 5 c. blue postal stationery envelope sent registered from Montevideo to J.B.Moens in Brussels, all tied by four strikes of the "C28" obliterator. Faint 'Monte-Video / Paid' despatch cds in red and fine straight line REGISTERED alongside. 'London / Paid' transit (Jan 16, 1872) and reverse with four Brussels arrivals (Jan 17). Perforations of the adhesives somewhat over the edge of the cover but a stunning item - the sole recorded combination of Great Britain stamps and Uruguayan postal stationery and the sole recorded usage of the 3 d. rose plate 6 used from Uruguay.     1843 (Oct 14): Entire letter from Macau to Liverpool endorsed 'via Marseilles p. Steamer Bentinck' with docket number 1379 at upper right, struck with superb oval "♚ / PAID / AT / MACAO" single ring handstamp in red (Frazao MAC BPPP1) and prepaid '1/10d.' in Macau below. Framed INDIA applied at Calcutta in transit, with Liverpool arrival on reverse (Feb 8, 1844) in black. Extremely rare, in use for just less than one year (Oct 14, 1843-Oct 1, 1844) with this strike being the earliest recorded by Parmenter & Gordon on page 2/4, there being but three examples of this handstamp recorded. Illustrated in Frazao "Pre-Filatelia Portuguesa" on page 237. One part of back flap missing but an extraordinarily rare Crown Circle Gi = £ 32'500.rnNote: Letter states "Sir. H. Pottinger went up to the Bogue on the 8th inst. when he had a meeting with the Imperial Commissioner and the exchange of the Supplementary Licence took place. HM Steamer Driver goes Northwards on the 20th inst., we hear, and takes up the Consuls for Amoy and Shanghai. The Consul for Ningpo will proceed to his port in a about a month. No Consul has been appointed yet to Foo Chow Foo...". Sir Henry Pottinger negotiated the Treaty of Nanking (1842) and became the first Governor of Hong Kong (1848-1854).

    1871 (Feb 6): Cover front from Macau to the Chief Postmaster in Lisbon with private handstamp 'Via Gibraltar' at top, franked by 1863/71 96 c. brownish-grey with a staggering 31 examples cancelled by thirty-three strikes of the"B62" obliterator in black. Superb strike of "♚ / PAGO / EM / MACAO" in black (Frazao MACPP5, see also the Gibbons footnote) alongside single ring datestamp MACAO (Feb 6, code B) in black and Gibraltar cds above of arrival (March 19). Red manuscript '£6.8.0' also at base; one or two stamps with faults but insignificant compared to the rarity of the franking - larger even than the Burghard and Canman examples illustrated on plate 61 in Webb's 'Treaty Ports'. A sensational item, just the three fronts with these high frankings are recorded: illustrated in Frazao '"Pre-Filatelia Portuguesa" on page 239.     1876 (May 29): Great Britain 1864/79 1 d. red pl. 173 and 1865 4 d. vermilion pl. 14 used on "Government Telegraph" envelope sent registered from Gibraltar to Tangier tied by two strikes of the "A26" obliterator with oval framed "REGISTERED / GIBRALTAR" datestamp at left (May 29) and good strike of rare "TAИGIER" datestamp with 'N' reversed in black (May 30, code A, with one year slug missing). The rate was 1 d. local rate plus 4 d. registration. Flap tears, photographic corner fault and imperfections, sensible restoration would be a benefit as this is a most unusual usage and the sole example of the rare "TAИGIER" datestamp used as an arrival cds on telegramme envelope. Unique.
