  • Lot# : 517 Cape of Good Hope

    De La Rue Printing 1863/64: 6 d. bright mauve, a fine pair with good to large margins all round, in a deep resonant shade, caused by file fold caused by the original content, used on 1864 cover endorsed 'Per Roman' from Cape Town to Forres, Scotland cancelled by numeral "1" obliterator in black. 'Cape Town / Cape Colony' datestamp at left in black (Aug 20). PAID / DEVONPORT / CAPE PACKET datestamp at right (Sept 24) in red. Reverse with large red wax seal (Standard Bank of British South Africa) and Forres arrival cds (Sept 26) in black. Contents include an appraisal of the Bank Manager in Bloemfontein and the message "Bloemfontein is 1000 miles from this place and you must not forget that in the Orange Free State men are very tricky and unscrupulous and frequently score out their friends in this Colony as the Freebooters did of old on the borders of Scotland". Tiny closed tear at top of envelope but an entire of superb appearance.
