1884/90: 6 d. reddish purple, a fine horizontal strip of five used on 1888 double rate cover to the Berlin Missionary Society, tied by late usage of the CGH triangular obliterator in black with scarce oval framed AMALIENSTEIN datestamp of despatch at left (Feb 27) in black. Reverse with 'Ladysmith / Cape Colony' transit cds, London transit in red (March 26) and Berlin arrival. 1891: De La Rue Appendix sheet 'B' dated 'April 9th, 1891' at top, with five Colour Trials for proposed 2½ d. value: perforated ½ d. printed in the chosen colour of sage-green; perforated 1 d. value in magenta; perforated 1 d. value in deep magenta; imperforate example for 3 d. in green on orange-yellow paper and imperforate 3 d. in carmine on orange-yellow paper. 1894: De La Rue 'Africa Essays', perforated 2½ d. Essays in a variety of different colours prepared for the 'South African Republic', 16 examples all in different shades, a few with blunted perfs. all with gum, together with an Imperforate Proof of the 'Helemted Female' design without 'Africa' or value tablet filled, printed in bright rose-carmine, this last unmounted og. 1901: Edwardian Issue, the ½ d. to 1 s. set of eight stamp size Essays by De La Rue in close to the issued designs, Imperforate on presentation cards (88 x 112 mm.), the head-plate printed on each, the surrounds hand-painted, with the ½ d. hand painted in two shades of green and lettering and value picked out in Chinese white; the 1 d. in carmine with frame printed from the 1893 ‘Hope’ issue and the value hand-painted in carmine; the 2 d. hand painted in two shades of purple and lettering picked out in Chinese white; 2½ d. printed in ultramarine; 3 d. in brown hand painted with lettering and value picked out in Chinese white; 4 d. in deep blue hand painted with lettering and value picked out in Chinese white; 6 d. in crimson hand painted with lettering and value picked out in Chinese white; 1s. olive-green with lettering and value picked out in Chinese white.
