Essays in a variety of different colours prepared for the 'South African Republic', 16 examples all in different shades, a few with blunted perfs. all with gum, together with an Imperforate Proof of the 'Helemted Female' design without 'Africa' or value tablet filled, printed in bright rose-carmine, this last unmounted og. A rare group: the Essays were produced in an effort to amagamate the Cape, Natal, OFS and Transvaal issues to equal values and colours to facilitate handling:
