    1878: Cover from Smithfield, Orange Free State to Frankfurt, Germany endorsed ‘Paid’ at lower left showing that the Orange Free State rate was prepaid in cash with circular SMITHFIELD / O. V. STAAT datestamp of despatch (March 11); franked by Cape of Good Hope 1864 6 d. and 1871 1 d. carmine in a horizontal pair tied by ‘Cape Town / Cape Colony’ datestamps (March 20). ‘London / Paid’ transit cds in red on front (April 20) and reverse with Frankfurt arrival. Some minor aging and envelope minimally reduced at left, but a rare cover.rn
