    1842: Entire letter from "Sloop of War, HMS Elphinstone, Bushire Roads, Nov 10th, 1842", mailed to England and endorsed "Via Baghdad and Falmouth", struck on front with circular PURIFIÉ AU LAZARET / MALTE in black and slitted for disinfection, charged '1/8d.' due in manuscript upon receipt in Worthing, Sussex (Feb 7). The letter is fascinating with return address noted: "W. F. Croad, Commodore's Clerk, Persian Gulf, Bassadore" and comments "The Steam Frigate Semiramis which vessel came up the Gulf for the purpose of taking down to Bombay three small steamboats returning from an expedition up the River Euphrates...disturbances in the Pearl Fisheries, we accordingly went to Sharja, Debay (Dubai), Abotheebee (Abu Dhabi) and Ras el Khymer but found everything quiet...". An extremely early written mention of these four Persian Gulf towns. Rare.

    Austrian Post Offices 1863/64: 5 s. rose, perf. 9½, in a horizontal pair used on 1868 cover from Haifa to Patras tied by CAIFA datestamp in blue (July 5). Taxed on arrival for inland delivery with Greece 1862/67 20 l. blue, two large and two touched margins, tied by 'Patras' cds (July 3, julian). Reverse with 'Lloyd Agenzie / Smirne' transit cds (July 11) and Syyros, Athens and Patras datestamps.     1794: Entire letter clearly datelined "Manila, 5 Aprile 1794" internally, travelling on the Trans-Pacific route via Mexico, with unique framed "S. BLAS" transit handstamp in black (Yag & Bash fig. GD85 / Tizon fig. 1) and equally fine "NUEVA / ESPAÑA" handstamp in red. The Pacific route was safer for Spanish Galleons, especially at this date when The French Revolutionary Armies were invading Catalonia. The letter, in Italian, states that the writer cannot sell gold for a good price, that he had received little help after a disisterous fire in Manila, and that his wife had given birth to their ninth child with six still alive. An exceptional entire, the file folds backed for protection but one of the rarest and finest of all Colonial period Maritime letters recorded. Small imperfections but a cover of great rarity and importance to Spanish Colonial and Philippine philately.

    1890c.: Stampless cover and complete letter, carried from Mecque / Mecca to Constantinople as tribute to the Sultan as Caliph, carried by thernSurre-i Hümâyûn Regiment or Surre Regiment, an institution known as Surre Emini in the Ottoman Empire, is the community that brought the money, grain and other gifts from Istanbul to Mecca and Medina as tribute to the Caliphate. The Surre-i Hümâyûn Regiment carried the gifts in a ceremonial 'Holy Carpet' march through Istanbul and Cairo (two illustrated postcards with the lot). Rare.
