A journey time of 188 days, a fine entire.

Reverse with "Sea Post Office / A" cds (July 12) and carried from Bombay to Suez on P&O "Caledonia". London cds (July 26) of transit in red on reverse. One small worm hole. Probably written from the Basel Mission in Chombala, an extraordinary destination.

Underpaid on arrival and taxed with "Overland Postage / Due / 1 a." charge (double the internal deficiency). reverse with Suez, Calicut, Mahe and Chombala (Nov 2) cds's. Small closed tear to envelope at right but a remarkable usage.

    Yanaoun 1862 (Sept 15): Entire letter from YANAOUN, French India, a small French settlement without a Post Office, mailed to Bordeaux, passed to the British Post Office at "INGERAM" with double arc cds in black (Sept 18) on reverse and curved INDIA UNPAID applied. Accountancy marking "GB / 1F 62 4/10" in blue (Salles fig. 3049) and framed INDIA UNPAID struck in Bombay, thence by P&O steamer "Malta" to Suez and "Talazac" from Alexandria to Marseille (Oct 19) and charged by handstruck '9' décimes due. Somewhat aged but a rare entire.

    1900: 25c. rose and blue on cover from 'Djibouti' addressed to Emperor Menelik II personally in 'Addis Abbeba'. On the reverse are two transit marks HARAR (7-8-19) and ENTOTTO (20-8-19). According to 'Payne' (Cockerill Series Booklet 17), the year slug '00' for 1900 was not available, hence '19' was used (as the next best thing). The stamp on this very fresh letter is stuck down over the edge. Nonetheless a most desirable letter of the period to a prominent recipient.

    Incoming from Austria 1862: Unpaid cover from Trieste to Calamata, endorsed "Col Vapore", struck by TRIEST despatch (July 19) cds, on arrival charged '75' lepta in red crayon and franked with 1861 Paris Printing 5 l. yellow-green and 40 l. mauve on blue in combination with 1861/62 First Athens printing 10 l. orange and 20 l. blue, a fine four-colour franking with fresh colour and good to large margins, all tied by '31' numeral of Kalmata, reverse with ATHENS transit cds. The Austrian debited the Greek postal administration "3 / 15" soldi in manuscript, for the local Trieste rate and the Lloyd' shipmail, respectively, the resulting 55 lepta plus the 20 lepta inland rate were charged to the receiver. The 10 lepta adhesive with vertical file fold and partially detached, nevertheless an appealing and interesting item. Hellas 3a+6a+12/Ia+13/Ia.

Upon arrival charged with '20' lepta in red crayon. Consecutive Athens printing 1862/67 20 l. blue applied and tied by '67' numeral of Syros, matching arrival cds (Dec 25, 1862) on reverse. The adhesive lightly touched at top, nevertheless an interesting and appealing cover with partial prepayment in cash from the period, when Greek adhesives were already in use while the Austrian Levant offices did not yet use adhesives.
