Matabeleland Campaign 1888: ½ d. vermilion used on overprinted 1½ d. grey-blue postal stationery card cancelled by "676" numeral obliterators with fine strike of "PALAPYE" cds at left (Dec 25, 1893) in black. The card addressed to Cranbrook, Kent with message "Xmas Day, 1893. Receeived letter from Brooksden on 23rd. Parcel did not arrive but they never come as quickly as letters. We are having a splendid Xmas here, most of us are having a good hard day's work and 50 tons of stores for the War will be in in a day or two to keep the thing up. Wishing you best wishes for the New Year. Give the card to Soo.". Cranbrook arrival (Jan 22) on reverse. The occupation of Matabeleland was over by December 1893, Jameson having entered Bulawayo on November 4th., Palapye is situated approximately half-way between Gaberone and Bulawayo. Zimbabwe) with complete original contents (with transcript) - "The road from Manicahas not been made or begun, though of course there are footpaths all the way, some of the Company's Police start for Beira tomorrow...4 prospectors came up yesterday...the carriers carry about 50 lbs. for about 2 yards per diem of the cheapest white cloth you can buy...". 1888: 3 d. lilac & black, a vertically bisected example used on famous 1904 cover top Maida Vale, London in combination with Protectorate 1902 ½ d. blue-green horizontal pair paying the correct 2½ d. rate, tied by neat strikes of "KANYE / BECHUANALAND" cds's in black (Dec 6, date slug inverted), the bisect signed underneath by "D. Solomon, P.M." as Postmaster. The reverse flap missing and paart address erased, reduced and reinstated. Nevertheless a magnificent cover - just four "Kanye" bisect covers are recorded: Two are available to collectors and bear halves of the same 3 d. adhesive; this cover and the one in the Danson & Inglefield-Watson collection (lot 1372), the others bear a bisected 4 d. value (Mosley collection, British Library) and a 1 s. value bisected (housed in the collection of His Majesty King Charles III). A rare usage - British Bechuanaland stamps remained valid in the Protectorate only, even after the formation of South Africa on 31 March 1910. Tati Concessions 1888: Bechuanaland 1 d. on 1 d. lilac & black, wmk. Orb, perf. 14, the famous used example cancelled by "TATI / BECHUANALAND" circular datestamp (21 Aug 1888) in black. As Tati was not part of Bechuanaland this cancellation was altered immediately after this journey with "Bechuanaland" being erased. This stamp being used on the sole Southbound journey from Tati to Vryburg. Superb and of great rarity.rnNote: The Tati Postal Agency was opened on August 15, 1888 and on the first mail South, the stamps were pen-cancelled. The canceller used above was delivered to the Tati Agency srrived in time for the second post (Aug 21).
