Lot# 2255 - Auction 321-332

  • Lot# : 2255 Betchuanaland

Overprinted by De La Rue 1897/1903: 2 d. grey-green & carmine, 3 d. purple on yellow and 1894 1 s. dull green all used on "Duty 4 d" on 3 d. brown postal stationery registered envelope and tied by "MOCHUDI / B.B." cds's in black (Nov 29, 1911) with Mafeking arrival cds on reverse of the same day. A rare usage - British Bechuanaland stamps remained valid in the Protectorate only, even after the formation of South Africa on 31 March 1910. Therefore the 1 shilling adhesive remained valid for use to Mafeking but from Mafeking to Mochudi, the stamp would not be valid.rnrnProvenance: Robson Lowe, London, 12 March 1985, lot 41; Christie's, London, 19 Nov 1996, lot 67.rnrn
