1886/88c.: The "Edmond Mangonés" Proofs - the six values all in marginal blocks of four on buff paper and printed in black, all being imperforate except the 20 c. value which is line perforated 11½ and shows the lower two positions without the Duty Plate "20" inserted. These Proofs were first offered on the philatelic market in 1976 when the Edmond Mangonés collection was sold (Edmond Mangonés, was a prominent Haitian businessman, well connected in Government circles, a member of the national commission for intellectual cooperation and of the Institute Haïtiano - Américain, Society d’Histoire et de Géographie). They are all from Plate III, but on a careful study of the indiividual positions and the relevant flaws show that the Proofs were printed after the issue of the adhesives concerned. Furthermoere, the figures of value have not been plugged into the plate as utilised on Plate III but inserted afterwards during a second printing. Brian Moorhouse speculated that these attractive Proofs were perhaps printed for Presentation purposes and then given to the prominent collector. See Edition D'Or vol. 50, page 182. Rare.
