'verde grigiastro' showing variety: oily printing 'inchiostro oleoso', a superb single adhesive showing all four complete margins 'otto filetti', tied by framed PORTOMAGGIORE handstamp to reverse of entire letter directed to Ferrara, then forwarded to Firenze. Reverse also struck by Ferrara transit (Oct 25, 54) and Firenze arrival (Oct 25) cds's. Upon arrival taxed with '6' crazie for a letter in the second rayon of the LEGA. Cert. E. Raybaudi (1998).rnNote: After the introduction of the Lira pontifica as new currency in the Papal states in June 1866 and prior to the introduction of the new adhesives in centesimi currency, the old bajocchi stamps had to be used furtheron. Prior to the adherenve of the Papal States to the LEGA in October 1852, letters to other Italian states were prepaid to the border with 5 baj, while the receiver had to pay for the residual journey, in this case '6' crazie for a letter in the second rayon of the LEGA. 'solferino', a fresh and fine adhesive with deep vibrant colour and good perforation, tied by Italian-style rhomb obliterator to entire letter directed to Torino with clear Papal-style "ROMA 30 SET 70" despatch cds alongside. Reverse with Torino arrival (Oct 2) cds and distribution datestamp. Correct 20 c. rate from the Papal States to Italy which was identical to the inland rate within Italy. Signed E.
