A rare stamp Gi = £ 600.rnrnNote: The National Bank of South Africa returned approximately 50 of the 1 d. brown and 100 of 1868/94 1 s. orange-yellow for overprinting after the Occupation of Bloemfontein on 13 March 1900. The overprinting was done and the stamps returned to the bank. The matter was referred to Major O'Meara who made efforts to recover the stamps. However, the Major's superior Officer, Colonel Williams, was president of Sidney Philatelic Society and it is more than likely that he, and others, shared the spoils, as most of the 50 examples of the 1 d. brown survived, whilst fewer of the initially more abundant 1 s. orange-yellow value (Gi. 110a) appear to have been donated to collectors but were, in actual fact, destroyed. 'V.R.I.' with raised stops 1900 (Post March): Second Setting 1 s. on 1 s. orange-yellow of 1868/94 issue, the so-called 'error of colour', the magnificent unused block of ten (2 x 5), of wonderful fresh colour and appearance, one entire row on reverse with the offset block showing, a dramatic and extraordinary rarity, diagonal unobtrusive crease on two stamps but remarkably fresh and fine with full unmounted og. An exhibition piece for the connoisseur of OFS philately, representing 10% of all the known examples overprinted in either forme, a famous multiple which has not been seen on the philatelic market for over 35 years Gi = £ 13'000+rnrnProvenance: The highlight of the Cecil A. Fenn Gold Medal exhibit in Johannesburg and London in 1960.rnrnNote: The National Bank of South Africa returned approximately 50 of the 1 d. brown and 100 of 1868/94 1 s. orange-yellow for overprinting after the Occupation of Bloemfontein on 13 March 1900. 110a / 121a) appear to have been donated to collectors but were, in actual fact, destroyed. "V.R.I." with thick "V" 1900 (Post March): 3 d. on 3 d. ultramarine, the spectacular irregular block of 32 from Setting V (blocks of 12 and 20 rejoined), all stamps showing "Surcharge Double" variety, positions 25-26/31-36/37-42/43-48/49-54/55-60, of excellent colour and appearance with Plate Number "1" at base and showing Surcharge Double on thin "V" stamps (28), Surcharge Double on thick "V" stamps (3) and a single example of Surcharge Double / Inverted "1" for "I". Illustrated in Hisey & Bartshe on page 214. A few minor imperfections, none affecting the appearance, but only one pane of 60 stamps was originally found and thus the surcharge double / Inverted "1" for "I" on position 37 is entirely unique - notwithstanding that the multiple represents 53% of the possible examples.
