    Wreck Mail 1887/88: 10 c. black on yellow, single example tied to 1892 cover to Vienna endorsed 'via New York' by Colon duplex in blue (Jan 13). Carried on the ill-fated North German Lloyd Steamer 'Eider' which sank off the Isle of Wight with much heroism displayed by the RNLI in saving the passengers and crew on board on January 31. The envelope struck with framed "Gehoben aus dem / geschetterten Schiff / "Eider" in violet with 'Franco' in black applied to denote payment. Reverse with New York transit cds (Jan 21) and Austrian P.O. Reseal label and arrival cds (March 9). Interesting article accompanies a fine and rare cover.rnrnNote: Friedrich Trump, grandfather of 45th U.S. President Donald Trump, emigrated from Bremen, Germany, to New York aboard the 'Eider' in 1885 at the age of 16. He made his fortune running brothels during the Klondike Gold Rush. Returning to Bavaria he was accused of avoiding the Military draft and denied citizenship and returned to the USA.

    Wreck Mail 1908: USA 2 c. red postal stationery envelope used from Los Angeles (Nov 16) to Panama, two stamps floated off due to the mail being recovered from the wreck of the Steamer 'Finance' with label on reverse "Post Office New York, NY / InquiryDepartment / The piece of mail herewith was recovered from wreck of the Steamer Finance, which was sunk / through collision with steamer Georgic, Thursday, Nov 26, 1908" tied by Panama arrival cds. 4 people died in the collision, with Capt. Mowbray of the Finance drawing his gun when ordering women and children to go to the lifeboats first (article attached). Scarce and fine for this.
