Confederation 1858 (May 1): 10 c. green, a diagonal bisect, slight fault, used on June 25, 1862 cover from Gualeguaychú to Buenos Aires, tied by bold strike of oval intaglio seal handstamp, attributed by Charles Jewell to a Riverboat handstamp of the "Goleta Minerva". This example is one of just three known strikes: one is on a 5 c. red used on May 2, 1862 cover from Gualeguaychú to BA, another on a famous piece with four wax seals at the edges of the 5 c. adhesive (this ex Corinphila, sale 49, Dec 1960, lot 2612) and this item which is probably the finest of the three strikes; copies of the these two items enclosed with the lot. Fine strike of unframed "Met Hr. Ms. K XVIII / Veroerd van Buenos Aires / Naar Tristan Da Cunha" in black with circular TRISTAN DA CUNHA cachet of arrival in blue (Type V). The cover was then re-addressed to Kaapstad with further unframed "Met Hr. Ms. K XVIII / Veroerd van Tristan da Cunha / Naar Kaapstad" in black on obverse and reverse with superb circular 'Legation de Pays-Bas / Buenos Aires' cachet in black. 1930: Wreck cover, sent airmail on the doomed flight from Argentina to Toulouse, the stamps and address missing due to immersion in water. The flight disappeared in a violent storm on the night of January 25, 1930 with the pilot, A. Bruyere and radio Officer L. Aubry never being seen again. One bag of mail was found on a Moroccan beach, the second bag was found at Mostaganem, Algeria on March 1, a label in French being applied on reverse of the cover "Correspondance rejetée par la mer sur la plage de Mostaganem, le 1er Mars 1930. Endorsed via 'Hambro & Sons, London' and, on entry struck with framed LIVERPOOL / SHIP datestamp in black (Jan 11, 1851). On arrival in London (Jan 13, 1851) the 8d. Ship fee was paid with "C.I.HAMBRO & SON / LONDON" cachet applied in black.
