The State of North Africa 1895 (Nov 18): The famous De La Rue Appendix sheet "B" showing the unadoped "unified" series (all the stamps showing a face value of 2 cents), with perforated values from a proposed ½ a. through to 8 annas (eleven) showing a Camel Postman design but in racing mode, the high values (5) for proposed 1 rupee to 5 rupees showing vignette of Liberty with sheaf of wheat; all labelled "State of North Africa". Not listed or illustrated in "The De La Rue Collection". Reverse with pencil annotation: "The Colour Scheme submitted with our quotation of this date in connection with the designs A, B, AA and BB, the 2½ annas alternative is a specimen in Turkey red for the flags if a 2-coloured stamp is preferred. Two colour designs were chosen by the Zanzibar Government when placing their first definitives order with us on 12 March 1896, when they asked that "colours in this shade will clash as little as possible. The 1 anna and 2 rupees colours were therefore changed to black and green respectively". A wonderful, truly splendid and extremely rare Appendix sheet in the foremost quality.
