    1882, 6 d. mauve, perf 12 x 10, horizontal pair, used, variety "Imperforate" between pair, cancelled by black postmark, right hand stamp has vertical crease, ragged perfs. in places,  otherwise fine, a rare error of printing. Cert. BPA (2013). Gi = £3'750.rnRemark: The discovery of this error was first recorded in the 'Australian Stamp Journal' in July 1911 when a bank correspondence was sold to the Sydney stamp dealer Fred Hagen, yielding a used vertical block containing nine imperforate pairs. This is believed to have been split and there is now a block of six in the H. L. White collection in the State Library of New South Wales, leaving six pairs available to collectors, of which one is damaged and one unaccounted for.rnrnProvenance: Ex. G. J. Robert Eaton, R&R Autograph Auctions, USA.rnCharles Kingsford Smith (known as ‘Smithy’) served as a pilot in the First World War. After the war many record-breaking flights took place around the world and Smithy wanted to be the first person to cross the Pacific Ocean by plane. At the time many thought a transpacific flight was impossible, as no plane could fly far enough. Smithy formed a partnership with Charles Ulm, who had also served in the war and shared Smithy’s enthusiasm for a transpacific flight. Smithy bought a three-engined plane in the United States called a ‘Fokker’ that could fit four people, which he called the Southern Cross. He and Ulm hired two Americans, Harry Lyon and James Warner, to navigate and work the radio on the Southern Cross.

    1861: Washington 10 c. yellow-green, used on cover from Washington to Guatemala, dated 19 March 1862, tied by Washington DC circular datestamp in black dated 20 March, with charge mark "2" in blue alongside. The envelope is addressed to "Hon. E. D. Crosby" (Elisha Oscar Crosby) and contains an extensive letter, headed up "Washington March 19th, 1862", contains interesting historical content relating to President Abraham Lincoln; ".....Mr. Lincoln will get the nomination at the Republican Convention which assembles in Blatimore in June or I will confess that I am politically blind. 13 State Legislators have already passed resolutions favouring his re-election and think they express the voice of the people, and if nominated his election is a certainty, beyond all question. Which is more than can be said for any other aspirant...."; the two page handwritten letter is signed; 'Sam' N. Hilton'; a wonderful snapshot into US politics during the American Civil War period. Very Fine. McAuliffe was chosen among 11,000 applicants to be the first teacher in space and had been scheduled to conduct two classes while in space. Greg Jarvis signature was added later, by someones other hand just to be ment to complete the crew signatures, as Jarvis was a late addition to the flight. A very scarce signed Launch Cover of the Challenger disaster. Probably only ten overs known.rn

An over-payment of the double 2 x 4 c. US rate. Charged at French triple rate with '15' décimes due marking in black on arrival (Aug 31).     1869: 15 c. blue & brown, Type II, a used example on 1869 cover with complete contents from Philadelphia to Paris, initially cancelled by black cork with "PHILADELPHIA / PAID / 12" credit cds in violet (Dec 10), carried on the French Paquebot "Pereire" with octagonal "ETATS-UNIS / PAQ. FR. H No. 1" datestamp (Dec 11) struck in red (Salles fig. 1713). Both these cancellations deleted in manuscript, as was the adhesive, when the cover was forwarded unpaid to EGYPT with "Forwarded By / Drexel Harjes & Co. / Paris" cachet in blue. French P.O. in Alexandria arrival cds (Jan 9, 1870) in black and charged there on arrival with '6' décimes handstruck in black. An extraordinary destination for the 1869 issue and a spectacular usage.

    1911: South Pole Expedition by Wilhelm Filchner 1911/12. Greeting card from Buenos Aires with text (in German) 'Greetings from E. Hegneck we  continue on 1st 10.  via South Georgia to the Ice. Last greetings, to Buenos Aires, German consulate'. The cards bears a 5 Centavos stamp 'San Martin' and the red label of the expedition 'DEUTSCHE SÜDPOLAR EXPEDITION", with cancellation "RE VITTORIO PIROSCAFO POSTALE ITALIANO 19 SET.11"  stamp and label are cancelled together, a second strike of the cancel is placed aside (possibly the cancel hadn't been updated). Some staining all round the the perforations otherwise fine condition.
