    1849 (Sept. 7): Entire letter from New Orleans to St. Louis, struck on obverse with distinct 27 mm intaglio "STEAMER SULTANA OF St. LOUIS" handstamp in red, no other postal markings, some toning and spots, nevertheless a fine shipmail item. rnNote: Not to be confused with the steambot Sultana, a commercial side-wheel steamboat constructed of wood in 1863, which exploded and sank on the Mississippi River on April 27, 1865, killing 1,167 people in what remains the worst maritime disaster in United States history.rn
