    1856 (Oct 1): Diligencias 80 c. green / deep green / emerald green, a complete unused reconstruction of the sheet of 35 types (5 x 7), with position 1 showing the "Small 80" variety, position 28 showing the diagonal crack under the duty tablet at base, nearly all stamps with clear to large margins all round which is exceptionally difficult on this issue which was printed with a separation space of under 1 mm. between many of the stamps, choice and fine reconstruction of which perhaps two or three complete reconstructions now exist.     1925 (March 1): Ramon Franco Flight Montevideo - Buenos Aires wtih his plane 'Plus Ultra', registered envelope (No: 023634) from Montevideo to Buenos Aires, franked with Airpost 10 c. scarlet and additional National postage (perfs. slightly stained) tied by duplex machine cancel, endorsed "Por hidroavion Plus Ultra" and "Gentilezza del heroico aviador Comandante Franco" in manuscript and arrival mark on reverse. Ex collection Nicolas Socorro with handwritten note included, mentioning  the existence of just fourteen letters carried on this famous flight.rnThe Spanish Commander Ramon Franco flew from Palos de la Frontera, in Huelva, Spain on January 22 and arrived in Buenos Aires on January 26 and stopped at Gran Canaria, Cape Verde, Pernambuco, Rio de Janeiro and Montevideo. He carried three letters from the King of Spain to the Presidents of Brazil, Uruguay and Argentina. The 10,270 km journey was completed in 59 hours and 39 minutes. After this famous flight he returned to Montevideo (Feb 25) and on March 1 he was given by the General Post Master 14 letters to carry back to Buenos Aires, before returning to Spain. The event appeared in most of the major newspapers worldwide. Throughout the Spanish-speaking world the Spanish aviators were glamorously acclaimed, particularly in Argentina and Spain where thousands gathered at Christopher Columbus square in Madrid.rnProvenance: Corinphila Sale 76, March 1987, lot 6253.

    1861/62: Second Setting 2 r. red, coarse impression, the famous unused sheet marginal vertical tête-bêche pair, with 4-5 mm. sheet margin at right and margins all round, the upper stamp showing Plate Variety "Top Left Corner Missing", the lower stamp with Plate Variety with white patch on EO of CORREOS reading "CORRCOS" at top, fresh colour and very fine but for minor ironed creases, without gum.     1841: 1 d. red-brown, lettered MI, used with an extraordinary irregular block of twelve 1841 2 d. blue, plate 3, lettered AE-AL / BI-BL, all tied to 1843 cover from Dromore, Ireland addressed to General O'Donnell, lately appointed Caprtain General of Cuba, tied by Maltese Crosses in black. Reverse with DROMORE cds in green (Oct 12), Dublin transit in red and London cds in red (Oct 14). Stamp AE defective and two further 1 d. or single 2 d. stamps missing from the cover (rate to Cuba was 2/3d.) and the letter-sheet somewhat cracked due to tropicalisation but an extraordinary franking to a very rare destination. Cert. Holcombe (1994).rnrnNote: O'Donnell was sent to Cuba as Captain General during October 1843. He is credited with the massacre of 1844 known as the repression of La Escalera. Thousands of slaves and free-coloured people in Cuba were confined in dungeons, were tortured and executed in what became known as the 'year of the lash'.

BPA (1993) Gi 140 = £ 2'750 / listed but unpriced used in Constantinople.rnrnNote: The Karl Louis Card Index records just three off cover used examples of this stamp used with 'C' obliterator, the Yates example (1940), the Trivett (1924) then Glassco (1969) example and the 'Besançon' example offered here. This famous error was discovered by an American collector in early 1893. He was at first disbelieved, however when A.B. Creeke examined the Plate 2 imprimatur sheet, he confirmed the existence of the flaw in October 1893.
