    1854: 1 d. red brown on blueish, Small Crown watermark, good perfs, tied by "WARRINGTON JY 31 1855" duplex postmark with '847' numeral to cover to Shanghai with manuscript "11d paid" and "via Marseilles" alongside, reverse with Hong Kong transit cds (24 SE 1855). 11 d. was the correct rate for this item for ¼ oz. via France, it was paid part in cash (10 d.) and part with a stamp (1 d.). A highly unusual combination, this ‘combined prepayment’ was possible only until August 1855. Some edge wear does not detract from the rarity of this cover.
