These deleted in manuscript as Paris had fallen to the Prussians with RETOUR / A L'ENVOYER in red (also deleted) in manuscript. Letter held for Prussian Censorship with framed VERSAILLES / AUS WECHSELUNGSSTELE handstamp in blue on reverse. Re-sent after Censorship with 'Paris / Rue D'Enghien' cds (Feb 13) and large framed 'P.D.' in black and London arrival (Feb 17) in red. Mailed out prior to the Prussian Censorship starting and taxed on the Travelling Post Office with curved "AFFR. INSUFF. / E.2" handstamp in black and manuscript crayon '3' (décimes) due in blue. Spa arrival cds on reverse (Feb 13). A fine entire with marvellous content (transcript attached) "Was it incumbent on French correspondents, before the War, to pay the Postage of letters for Belgium? I don't know. If yes, how to do so now? If no, this letter will be forwarded...my fellow, speaking the German language, was welcome, and Prussian Soldiers, who threatened the others "zu uber den haufen schiessen" (word for word) what is to fire on the heap - were careful. It was forbidden to go ahead (to St. Denis) but a young Officer took charge of my letter...".

    1871/75: Cérès 5 c. green and 25 c. blue, type III, both in hor. pairs, all in fresh and fine condition with good perforation, tied by '1769' gros chiffre to folded letter to Stockholm Sweden with "LE HAVRE 26 JUIL. 75" cds and framed PD in red alongside, reverse with Paris Étranger in blue (July 27). An interesting cover in the 60 c. pre-GPU letter rate, despatched in the six months between the GPU foundation and the joining of France. The 5 c. pair shows in addition the peculiarity, that the lower half of another pair was glued below.

    1871/75: Cérès 30 c. brown and 80 c. rose used on attractive 1873 cover endorsed 'Voie d'Autriche' addressed to the French Consul in Jerusalem, the adhesives neatly tied by '1015' gros chiffres with corresponding 'Clermont de L'Oise' cds at right (March 22) and two strikes of red 'PD'. Reverse with 'Paris / Étranger' cds in blue, Trieste oval datestamp and Austrian P.O. GERUSALEMME datestamp of receipt (April 7). An extraordinary cover: the route was slower, the rate more expensive - the first example of such a usage to Jerusalem we have recorded.

Backflap is missing but a fine presentation of the 150 c. rate to France with a British vessel, a usage which was only possible from Guadeloupe between November 1851 and August 1853. AVRIL 73" cds and framed PD in black as well as "COLONIES FRA. V. ANGL. 14 MAI 73" cds in blue alongside. Addressee's name crossed out, but an exceptional and appealing presentation of the double weight rate of 140 c. in the tariff of October 1864 via a British vessel. Yvert not listed.
