New Stones 50 bani pale blue & red, a very fine example with large margins on three sides and shaved but not touched at right (the stamp showing the marginal separation lines at base and vertically at left), used on 1872 cover to Venice tied by "Bucuresci" datestamp (30/9) in black. Repeated strike of the datestamp at top and framed P.D. in black at right. File fold below the adhesive, and reverse with Venice (Oct 5) arrival datestamp. An exceedingly rare cover with the adhesive in use for just 2½ months, with just 8 letters bearing this stamp recorded in the Heimbüchler census and perhaps just 10 all told. 1872: 5 bani carmine, perf. 12½, a vertical strip of three (Transfer Types 5/7/9) used on extremely rare 1872 cover front to the Romanian Bank in London all tied by "Bucuresci" datestamps (May 31) in black (Kiriac fig. 488) with framed "P.D." alongside in same ink (Paid to Destination) and the adhesives also tied by framed DUPÂ / PLACARE (Too Late) marking in black (Kiriac fig. 1598) in black. Framed orange red "P.D." at left and manuscript "2" (silvergroschen) credit to German Postal Union in red crayon at left. A fresh and fine piece. Illustrated in Edition D'Or on page 142. 1872: 10 bani blue, perf. 12½, a fine used example on 1872 entire letter to Braila, endorsed "Cu Vaporu" (by ship) and thus travelled down the Danube by D.D.S.G. vessel, tied by good strike of scarce BECHET datestamp (April 1) in blue (Kiriac fig. 375). File fold well away from the adhesive, reverse with Braila arrival cds (April 3) in black. Scarce and attractive entire, believed to be the sole example of a 'cu Vaporu' cover not from the Farranga correspondence. Signed Heimbüchler.

1872: 10 bani blue, perf. 12½, a diagonally bisected example with minor closed tear at right, used on large piece of cover, tied by FOCSANI datestamp (Apr. 26) in blue (Kiriac fig. 497), with "Bucuresci" arrival cds at left (Apr. 27). Extremely rare bisected usage with just two covers recorded with a perforated 10 bani and three usages on piece, all are from Focsani. 1872: 25 bani brown, perf. 12½, (Transfer Type 5). a fine example with some ageing removed, used on 1872 underpaid cover from Bucharest to Constrantinople, cancelled by small "Bucureci" thimble datestamp (22/7) in black. Framed "PD" alongside in black, but underpaid 15 bani for this service, and struck with two line AFFRANCHISEMENT / INSUFFISANT in black and then charged "1" (piastre) to pay in blue crayon. Austria 1850/54: 6 kr. brown and 9 kr. blue, fine large margined examples used on 1855 entire letter to Vienna, cancelled by bold strike of KK. ÖST. F.P. KRAJOVA datestamp (Aug 6) in black (Tchilinghirian fig. 735). Rastel punched and with single slit for disinfection, with one hole through the 9 kr. adhesive, reverse flap (opens for display) with Alt-Orsova, Temesvar and Vienna datestamps. A most attractive and scarce usage at Civilian rate through the Military Post Office period during the Crimean War. Austria 1858: 10 kr. brown (2, one on reverse) and 15 kr. blue used on 1859 registered cover from Vienna to Waslui, endorsed on front "via Jassy" and addressed to Madame Catherine Rosetti née Stourdza, a Boyar family in Waslui. Adhesives tied by neat strikes of "Recommandirt / Wien" datestamps in red (July 25) with reverse showing Czernowitz transit cds in black (27/7) and Austrian P.O. datestamp JASSY on reverse in blue (29/7). The letter would then have been picked up by a retainer of the Stourdza family for delivery to Waslui. A fresh and fine cover in excellent condition. Danube & Black Sea Line Steamers 1870/72: The famous cover bearing the mixed issue franking to Braila, Romania with 1870 1 pi. red, perf 12½ used in combination with imperforate 1872 10 pa. black & red on blue overprinted LETTER in red, each stamp neatly tied by the diamond grill handstamp struck in red. Oval blue Com,pany cachet underneath the 10 pa. adhesive (Zarigrad = Constantinople) and small manuscrript "5" in red crayon possibly being a Ship's Captain's fee or representing 5 bani credit to the local Office in Braila. Slight cover tear at top and with flap missing on reverse but an extremely rare franking. Only 8 covers bearing T. B. Morton adhesives are recorded and just 4 with the 'Letter' adhesive. Greek Post Office 1863: Cover from Braila to Athens struck on front with outstanding strike of Greek P.O. "IBRAILA / VLACHIA" datestamp of despatch in blue (Sept 14), addressed to Durutti in Athens and struck on reverse with Piraeus transit cds. Manuscript "110" lepta to pay in red crayon and franked by Large Hermes 1862/67 2nd Athens printing 10 lep. orange on bluish, 20 lep. blue and 80 lep carmine all tied by Athens datestamps (Sept 23). 1872: Paris print 10 b. blue, 15 b. deep brown and 25 b. yellowish bistre (2) all tied to pre-UPU June 1875 envelope to Athens by BACAU datestamps in black and paying the full tariff for mail to Greece of 75 bani (the cover was presumably held at the P.O. awaiting full payment, as the 10 b. is cancelled a day after the other three stamps). Endorsed "via Varna" at upper left the reverse shows transits of Bucharest, Galatz, Constantinople and Piraeus; and charged for local delivery with Greece March 1875 40 lepta black & green Postage Due (Mi 6) tied by dotted "1" numeral in black. An exceptional and most unusual cover - only a small time period of possible usage as both countries joined the UPU in July 1875. Russian Levant 1868: 10 kopek carmine & green, a fine example used on 1869 cover from Galatz to Taganrog, tied by Cyrillic GALATZ datestamp (Nov 3) and by dotted obliterator, both struck in in bright blue ink. Reverse with further fine strike of the Russian P.O. in Galatz datestamp (Tchilinghirian fig. 49) and front showing Odessa transit datestamp in black (Nov 4). Despite a small horizontal tear at top left, a rare cover, offered as is Tel quel!
