Framed INDIA PAID in red below and circular 'INDES D'OR / 2 MARSEILLE 2' entry marking in red alongside, where taxed '10' décimes due in black: tariff for a single letter from 1 Aug 1849. Bordeaux arrival cds (Sept 17) on reverse of an attractive and scarce entire.

    1854: India 2 a. green, two horizontal pairs, clear to large margins all round used on 8 March 1855 entire letter from Calcutta to Bordeaux (same correspondence as the previous lot), prepaid to Alexandria, endorsed "p. Bombay via Suez & Marseille", tied by dotted lozenges in black. Framed INDIA PAID in red below and circular 'INDES D'OR / 2 MARSEILLE 2' entry marking in red alongside, where taxed '20' décimes due in black: tariff for a double letter (above 7½ grams) from 1 Aug 1849. Bordeaux arrival cds (April 15) on reverse of a most attractive and rare entire.

Reverse with circular AGRA despatch in red and double arc BOMBAY transit in red. Circular "PAYS ETR. V. SUEZ / AMB. B." entry marking in red (Aug 4) and charged with handstruck '8' décimes due to pay. Edge wear and slightly soiled but not unattractive.

    1865: 1 a. brown and 1866 4 a. green, Die I, used on 1866 underpaid cover from Madras to Bordeaux endorsed "via Marseilles" tied by "MADRAS / INDIAN PAID / 1" duplex (Dec 14) with circular "MADRAS / INDIAN UNPAID" cachet below the adhesives (same day) and framed "INSUFFICIENT" alongside framed "GB / 1F 62 4/10c." accountancy marking all in black. Charged '10' décimes handstruck on arrival (the initial franking ignored) with Bordeaux cds (Jan 10, 1867) on reverse of an attractive cover.

    1865: 8 p. purple on white, two examples used with single 1869 4 a. green, Die I, on 1871 cover from Calcutta to Marseille endorsed "via Bombay" tied by octagonal "B/1" obliterators in blue on despatch (Feb 15). Carried on the new Brindisi route (from 21 December 1870) with circular "POSS. ANGL. V. SUEZ / MARSEILLE" entry marking in red (March 10) and charged "4" décimes handstruck in black for a letter under 10 grams. Slight cover bend and two closed cuts in face panel away from adhesives but a very scarce and early usage.

    1865: 8 p. purple on white, two examples used with single 1869 4 a. green, Die I, on 1871 cover to Bordeaux endorsed "France via Suez" tied by "Telichery / 90" duplexes (May 31) in black. Mailed via Calicut (May 3) and Bombay with the adhesives also tied by framed "GB / 1F. 66c." accountancy marking struck at Bombay; thence via the new Brindisi route with fair only "POS. AN. V. SUEZ / AM. MARSEILLE" entry marking in red (June 9) and the letter taxed '14' décimes due (10+4 décimes) in black. A rare and fine entire, this tariff lasted just 6 months.

Carried on the new Brindisi route (from 21 December 1870) with circular "POS. AN. V. SUEZ / AM. A. MARSEILLE" entry marking in red (May 28) and charged "4" décimes handstruck in black for a letter under 10 grams. Slight soiling of no significance, a scarce usage. Signed Calves.

Calcutta despatch cds on reverse (Jan 7) and struck in Bombay with scarce framed "GB / 12F 20c." accountancy marking in black. Circular "POSS. ANG. V. SUEZ / ALEXANDRIE" in red (Jan 24) and taxed with handstruck '20c.' due marking with Paris arrival at left. Addressee's name deleted but nevertheless scarce and attractive.

    1865: 1 a. brown, used on March 2 1866 Printed Matter entire letter from Calcutta to Paris paying the internal rate, endorsed "per Meinam", tied by Company oval cachet and by "CALCUTTA / INDIA UNPAID / 1" duplex in blue. The French Paquebot "Meinam" travelled via Pondichery, Galle, Suez, Alexandria (March 28), and on arrival in Marseille the entire was taxed by handstruck '15c.' charge marking in red. A choice and scarce usage.

Struck on entry with "POSS. ANG. V. BRIND / A. MOD" in red (March 1), framed 'P.P.' and charged with scarce '25c.' due marking in red. Minor fault on back flap but a scarce cover.

    1866: 4 a. green, Die I, a used example on 1874 opened for display cover endorsed "via Bombay" addressed to a passenger on the "Iraouady" French Paquebot care of the Messageries Impériales Agent in Aden, tied by "Tellichery" duplex (July 13) in black. Struck on arrival with fine "ADEN STEAMER POINT" cds's (July 20, July 25) and framed POSTAGE DUE in black. Readdressed to Marseilles (Aug 8) from Aden via Brindisi and passenger still unfound: INCONNU A L'APPEL / MASRSEILLE / DE LA 2EME BRIGADE applied in red (and first attempt with same in black) with handstruck '24' décimes charge mark in black and rare framed "REEXPEDIE / TAXE ETRANGERE (1 Fr.) / TAXE FRANCAISE (1 Fr 40c.) in red. Returned to sender (Aug 14) and struck on arrival Dead Letter Office cachets of Bombay (Oct 28) and Madras (Oct 31). A fascinating and remarkable cover with many seldom encountered handstamps.

BRIND / A MOD." entry marking in red (Feb 8) and charged with handstruck '15' décimes due marking in black. Most attractive and scarce.

Circular "Modane a Paris" datestamp in red (Aug 3), manuscript notation "0.50c." and duly taxed at double the deficiency with 1881/92 Postage Due 10 c. black (2) and 30 c. black. Reverse with full French Consular cachet in blue.

    1890: India 1 a. brown on blue postal stationery envelope to Aniche, France endorsed "Via Bombay and Brindisi through French Post Office Modane, Stamped Three Annas", cancelled at "Nowgong" (Nov 19). Notation of "2 a." possibly paid in cash in blue manuscript, however struck with circular "T" marking on despatch. Carried on the "Arcadia" with 'Sea Post Office' cds (Nov 22) on reverse. Taxed on arrival at double the deficiency with 1881/92 5 c., 15 c. and 30 c. black tied by Aniche cds's.
