Taxed upon arrival, a scarce and most attractive cover.rnNote: The cover was addressed to Heinrich Schliemann (1822-1890), who was in 1862 a very wealthy merchant of German origin in St. Petersburg who has made a fortune during the Crimean War. In 1864 he left this business learned the classical languages of the Mediterranean - it is told that he learned Turkish during a three week long visitit in Constantinople. He became a pioneer in the field of archaeology. He was an advocate of the historicity of places mentioned in the works of Homer and an archaeological excavator of Hisarlik, now presumed to be the site of Troy, along with the Mycenaean sites Mycenae and Tiryns. 1901 (Nov 11): Registered Cover of a Boer Prisoner of War from St. Helena to Johannesburg, Transvaal bearing 1864-80 2 d. yellow in combination with 1884-94 ½ d. green with 14½ mm ovpt and 2½ d. ultramarine, three fine and fresh adhesives, lightly tied by "ST. HELENA NO 11 01" cds in black. Obverse shows clear strikes of oval "REGISTERED / ST. HELENA", circled "R", oval "PRISONER OF WAR / BROAD BOTTOM CAMP / CENSOR" with manuscript note and oval "PASSED PRESS CENSOR / JOHANNESBURG", reverse with Johannesburg arrival cds (Nov. 21, 1901) in black. An attractive cover.rnNote: At the beginning of the Second Boer War (1899-1902) initial Boer attacks were successful, and although British reinforcements later reversed these, the war continued for years with Boer guerrilla warfare. This was changed with harsh British counter-measures including a scorched earth policy and with survivors being forced into concentration camps. Very large proportions of these civilians died of hunger and disease, especially the children.
