Lot# 5007 - Auction 234-243

  • Lot# : 5007 Argentina

Confederation 1858 (May 1): 10 c. green, a diagonal bisect, slight fault, used on June 25, 1862 cover from Gualeguaychú to Buenos Aires, tied by bold strike of oval intaglio seal handstamp, attributed by Charles Jewell to a Riverboat handstamp of the "Goleta Minerva". This example is one of just three known strikes: one is on a 5 c. red used on May 2, 1862 cover from Gualeguaychú to BA, another on a famous piece with four wax seals at the edges of the 5 c. adhesive (this ex Corinphila, sale 49, Dec 1960, lot 2612) and this item which is probably the finest of the three strikes; copies of the these two items enclosed with the lot. A rarity.
