1864/71: 4 d. yellow and 6 d. red-brown used on 1870 cover from Dunedin to Bolton-Le-Moors endorsed 'via Suez & Marseilles', cancelled by 'Dunedin / 0' duplexes in black (Oct 17) and also struck with framed INSUFFICIENTLY PAID / FOR BRINDISI ROUTE / DEFICIENT POSTAGE / 3d." in black as the 'via Marseilles' route was closed due to the Prussian encirclement of Paris from mid September 1870. Reverse with Bolton arrival cds (Dec 26) in black. The envelope with minor imperfections but of great rarity, just two examples are recorded of this rare Deficient handstamp applied to New Zealand mails, this being the finer of the two. Cert. The cover with backflap missing and the envelope with some sensible restoration (between 1988 and 2000), the stamps lifted for checking and replaced. 1864/71: 1 s. yellow-green, single example in a bright shade, used on 1867 cover from Christchurch to Goderich, Canada West via Panama tied by "C" obliterator in black. Christchurch despatch cds below (Oct 30) and '4d.' credit annotation in blue crayon. Reverse with ST. THOMAS transit cds (Dec 14) and Goderich arrival cds (Jan 2, 1868) in black. Cover ironed and with slight trim at left but an attractive usage to a scarce destination: by London GPO notice of Nov. 29, 1867, the New Zealand P.O. were instructed to make up Mails for St. Thomas rather than Panama. This was short-lived as the Canadian Govt. asked for Mails to be made up from Panama to New York to avoid delays. Cert. 1919 (Nov 20): British Occupation 5 r. brown on buff, a used example on 1920 cover to Constantinople, tied by "Batum" cyrillic datestamp in black (March 14) with repeated strike at left.
