    1857 (Sept 10): Great Britain 1857 1 d. rose-red, perf. 14, a used horizontal pair on 1857 entire letter from Gibraltar to Genova endorsed 'Tiber', tied by two strikes of the "G" in bars obliterator with double arc GIBRALTAR datestamp below (Sept 10). Red 'VIA / DI MARE / (E)' of arrival and originally charged '3' but deleted and changed to "15 cmi." in black. Genova arrival in red on reverse of a very rare entire - used in the first week of the "G" obliterator (the first recorded date of use is September 7) and the second earliest cover used in a British Colony with stamps directly supplied from Great Britain.     1858 (April 7): Great Britain 1855/58 2 d. blue, wmk. Large Crown, perf. 16, a used example on cover from Gibraltar to Tangier tied by the "G" in bars obliterator with double GIBRALTAR cds above in blue (April 7). File folds but an exceedingly scarce stamp on letter. The Tangier British Post Office opened in April 1857, this being one of the earliest covers known that would have been handled by that Office Gi = £ 400 off cover.

An extremely scarce early usage to a scarce destination, a most attractive cover.

Reverse with side flap missing but showing complete 'Bishop's Stortford' arrival (Jan 17).     1869 (Oct 18): Great Britain 1864/79 1 d. red pl. 133, two horizontal strips of three lettered QI-QG and RG-RI, used on 1869 cover from Gibraltar to London all tied by six strikes of the "A26" obliterator with GIBRALTAR despatch cds alongside (Oct 18). Prepaid for single rate, found to be double weight and struck with rare "INSUFFICIENTLY / * / PREPAID" and two line"DEFICIENT POSTAGE (6d.) / FINE (6d.)" in black. Circular MORE TOP PAY below and handstruck "1/-" charge marking (Oct 25). Edge abrasions sensibly restored but a rare and most appealing usage.

'London / Paid' transit cds on front (Nov 4) and reverse with double arc 'Hamilton / UC' and 'London / UC' arrival cds's (Nov 17). The adhesives with minor imperfections as slightly to top edge of thin paper envelope but an unusual cover.

Copenhagen arrival cds on reverse (Nov 27). Reverse with HONG KONG transit cds (Jan 30, 1860) and MANILA arrival (Feb 3) where charged 3 reales due for local delivery.     1860 (May 9): Great Britain 1856 4 d. rose, a single example used on cover from Gibraltar to Lyttleton, New Zealand tied by "A26" obliterator with single ring GIBRALTAR despatch cds in blue alongside (May 9). The adhesive also just tied by "Auckland / New Zealand" transit cds (July 17) with faint "Port Victoria / New Zealand" cds (Aug 12) at left. Pinhole in cover at left (probably hung up at the Post Office awaiting collection) and reverse with flap fault and 'Malta' transit cds. The rate is inexplicable.

    1866 (March 1): Great Britain 1862 6 d. lilac, a used example on 1866 cover from Gibraltar to Guildford endorsed 'per first Steamer' tied by bold strike of the "A26" obliterator with GIBRALTAR despatch cds alongside (March 1). The fine adhesive also tied framed PAID / LIVERPOOL / SHIP datestamp (March 16) in red with circular "PAID / LONDON SHIP LETTER" cds in red adjacent (March 17) and Guildford arrival on reverse. Horizontal file fold but a lovely cover.

Struck with two strikes of "♚ / REGISTERED" one in red and one in black, with 'Registered / London' oval in red (March 26) and French CHARGÉ in black. Reverse with 'Rate Box' and arrival (March 28). Carried on the 'Baroda' from Gibraltar to Southampton and on the NGL Steamer 'Hansa' from Southampton to New York where struck with '5 / N. York Am. Pkt.' in black (Dec 9) with '16 / Cents' credit marking in red. File folds but most appealing.

    1865 (Aug 4): Great Britain 1865 6 d. lilac pl. 5, lettered SC, an extraordinary mis-perforated example imperforate at base, at left and at right with vertical row of perforations through the centre of the stamp and horizontally through the letterings at top, used on 1865 envelope from Gibraltar to London endorsed 'via Spain' tied by "A26" obliterator in black. GIBRALTAR despatch cds at right (Aug 4) and 'London / Paid' arrival (Aug 10). The envelope with some soiling but a remarkable stamp.rnProvenance: Christie's, 12 April 1988, lot 813.

    1859 (July 20): Great Britain 1857 1 d. red perf. 14, three examples used with 1848 Embossed 10 d. brown, clear to large margins all round, on small 1859 cover from Gibraltar to Montreal, Canada endorsed 'per Steamer via Liverpool & Queenstown', carried at single rate tied by "A26" obliterator and by two strikes of the "GIBRALTAR / A26" duplex (July 20). 'London / Paid' transit cds (July 27) in red and from Liverpool on the Allan Line 'Nova Scotian', reverse with datestamps of Berthiers, Montreal and Lanoraie (Aug 13). One 1 d. red with two pulled perfs. but of no significance - an extraordinary and unique usage of the Embossed 10 d. on cover from Gibraltar.

    1858 (Dec 22): Combination cover, Great Britain 1855 2 d. blue, pl. 6, a used example on cover from Gibraltar with Carver Brothers cachet at left, mailed to Cadiz (MacPherson correspondence) endorsed 'per San Fernando' tied by "G" in bars obliterator with single ring GIBRALTAR cds below (Dec 22) in blue and Spain April 1856 4 cs. rose (Michel 40) alongside and pen-cancelled paying for onward transmission. Reverse with Cadiz arrival cds (Dec 23). A fine and rare combination usage.rnNote: One June 14, 1856, the Spanish Postmaster in San Roque informed Edmund Cresswell Jr., the Postmaster in Gibraltar that in future all mail addressed to destinations within Spain would have to be prepaid by Spanish stamps (the 2 d. Gibraltar rate was more frequently prepaid in cash). This continued until 1875 when, on Nov 25, an agreement between Spain and Gibraltar was signed allowing prepayment of letters with stamps of the country of origin.

Reverse with Cadiz arrival cds (March 6). Adriano' tied by "A26" obliterator with GIBRALTAR datestamp above (Dec 16) in black and paying the Ship Letter fee, overlapping Spain January 1865 4 c. blue perf. 14 (Michel 68) tied by barred "3" numeral handstamp cancelled on arrival in Cadiz in black and also tying the British adhesive. Reverse with Cadiz arrival cds (Dec 17).
