Unapparent horizontal crease at base, with large part og. Extremely rare, this being the Rod Perry example, just five examples were overprinted with the SPECIMEN handstamp with just two now recorded: this example and the example in the collection of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. Reverse with 'Melbourne / Crown / Victoria' despatch datestamp (April 30) and scarce oval "Ship Letter / Crown / Liverpool" of transit (July 25) - an 85 day journey - and London and Hamburg datestamps. Rated '8' for ship letter and altered to 1 s. in manuscript on obverse, charged '19' schillinge due on receipt. Listed by Ben Palmer on page 109 of the Victoria pre-UPU census. 1897: Charity 1 d. (1 s.) blue, a used example on fine postcard with illustration of Major General Sir Hector MacDonald DSO, cancelled by centrally struck "Wangarata" cds in red (Jan 6, 1912). Scarce and most attractive.rnrnNote: The son of a Scottish crofter, 'Fighting Mac' MacDonald enlisted in the Gordon Highlanders as a private at 17, and finished his career as a Major General. He distinguished himself in action at Omdurman (1898), became a popular hero in Scotland and England, and was knighted for his service in the Second Boer War. Posted to Ceylon as Commander-in-Chief of British forces, he committed suicide in Paris in 1903 following accusations of homosexual activity with local Sinhalese boys. 1882: Bradbury Wilkinson & Co. imperforate Plate Proofs for 2 s. brown-vermilion, 5 s. steel blue, 10 s. emerald-green and £ 1 vermilion; in full sheets of 30 subjects (5 x 6) on thick card paper, each sheet with "Bradbury Wilkinson & Co. Bank Note Engravers &c., London" imprints at base (the imprint was removed from the Plate before printing of the issued stamps commenced in Brisbane). The sheets were included in the BW despatch together with the steel printing plates sent to the Government Printing Office in Brisbane. Some trivial aging at the edges of the sheets not affecting the dramatic and splendid appearance. A sensational and unique group. Certs.
