1849/50: Cérès 15 c. green on greenish, a fine example with clear rto large margins all round, used on 1852 cover initially accepted as payment for a local Paris letter and tied by Paris Star with cds at right (March 31). However, once the address in 'Lyon' was noted (Rue St. Doiminique existed in both towns), the Postmaster marked "Insuffisant" below the stamp in red ink and charged the letter "10c" to pay (double the deficiency of 5 centimes). Entire letter with the first French stamp as an early but erroneous usage abroad 1849 (Jan 8): Cérès 20c. black on yellowish, a fresh example with good to large margins all round, tied by crisp "LYON 8 JANV. 49" type 15 cds to entire letter, directed to Duderstadt Hannover with endorsement "franco jusqu'à Strasbourg" alongside, reverse with "12 .." handstamp. The Cérès stamp was erroneously used to pay the internal postage in France and the cover was taxed first with '8' Sgr. then with '6½' Sgr. upon arrival. A very early usage within France (2nd week),probably one of the earliest usages of a French adhesive on a cover to Hannover. The sender was Ludwig von Sothen, writing to his brother Karl Wilhelm von Sothen, both members of a local Duderstadt noble family. A fine and very rare entire. Cert. Telegraphs 1868: The wonderful imperforate group, with unused, without gum, irregular blocks / strips: 25c. rose in a block of 36 with one used with blue datestamp (Maury 1 = € 13'670), 50c. green in a superb corner block of 11 (Maury 2 = € 3'740), 1fr. orange in a strip of 11 (ten + one) and 2fr. violet both marginal from top of sheet (Maury 3 = € 14’300 and Maury 4 = € 14’300), with complete original and contemporary envelope explaining the reason for the multiples (the translation follows: “These stamps are very rare - all are definite authentication. They have been given to me about 1880 by Hericart de Thury, previous head of the Accounts Office of the Telegraph Administration, who received them formerly for giving specimens to foreign Administrations who had asked for them and who saved them from the pillage of the Siege and the Commune 1870-71 (Signature)”. An extraordinary set - as far as we are aware, the sole recorded examples of interpanneau strips of this issue, as the sheets were separated prior to being supplied to the Posts & Telegraph Offices. Mail from Greek Offices in the Levant 1868: Extraordinary cover at seven times the 45 lepta rate by French ship, franked at 315 lepta and mailed from Constantinople to Athens bearing 1862/67 5 l. green, 10 l. bright orange on blued, 20 l. blue, 40 l. dull mauve on grey-blue and three 80 l. carmine all tied by dotted '95' numeral handstamps with 'Constantinople' cds of despatch (Feb 28) above and oval Greek PD alongside.
