    2 pi. yellow, the famous corner marginal block of six, wmk. inverted, perf. compound 13 x 12½, with part FRANCOBOLLI imprint at right. Minor bend mentioned for accuracy but of fresh colour and fine large part original gum. A wonderful and extremely rare block, illustrated in colour on the dust jacket of 'Stamps & Postal History'. Addressed to 'Captain C G. Pate, Superintendent of Packets in Southampton' with 9 d. rate for first ¼ ounce and then 3 d. per each further ¼ ounce, thus a triple rate franking. Minor imperfections but a scarce cover.

    Note: Prior to the UPU, letters from Italy prepaid were carried at 40 centesemi, unpaid letters were charged 60 centesemi. Post UPU, letters were charged at double the deficiency.

    Tokar 1896 (April 25): Cover to London franked by 1888 5 m. rose-carmine in a horizontal pair, one stamp with rounded corner perf., tied by bold strike of TOKAR datestamp in black (Stagg fig. 19-3) with fine repeated strike below. Reverse with Sawakin cds (April 26), Suez cds (April 30) and London arrival cds (May 8). Edge wear and opening tears at top, however a remarkable cover with just two known from this small town. Illustrated in Smith on colour plate 15. Rare.

    1801 (Sept 1): Entire letter written from Alexandria to Scotland, address faint but manuscript at top 'Supposed St. Andrews', struck with fine oval 'Ship Lre. / Crown / PORTSMOUTH' in black, initially charged at '10d.' and altered to '1/2d.' due on delivery (Nov 19) with red Bishop mark on front and London transit (Nov 15) in red on reverse. The letter reads 'I am happy to inform you that the articles of Capitulation were signed yesterday' at Alexandria. An extremely rare entire.

    1898: Officer's letter mailed from Wadi Halfa to Abbassia, sent stampless with 'Halfa' cds (June 10) and 'T' mark of despatch; originally taxed on arrival in Cairo with 1889 1 pi. ultramarine (July 7), slight aging, erroneously charged and annulled with 'T' marking as the Officer's endorsement had not been read. Reduced tax on arrival paid by provisional 3 m. on 2 pi. orange tied by 'Abbasia' cds (July 8). Roughly opened at left but a very rare cover.

The form accompanied a parcel containing gold at a value of 173 piastres 25 paras to Abu Hammad and is signed and dated at base on arrival the following day.     1943 (Nov 17): 5th Birthday of Princess Ferial, the album page with Essays for the Birthday overprint: top marginal vertical strip of five showing top stamp with accepted overprint, the next four with large, heavier impressions and four Albino overprints inverted; second vertical strip of five (from same column) with second stamp 'Double Overprint', third stamp with 'Blue Overprint', fourth with 'Greenish Yellow Overprint', last stamp without overprint (all again have inverted Albino overprints); lastly a third vertical strip of four with Trial Overprint in black but with each overprint Double.     1801 (Aug 3): Entire letter written from 'Camp near Rosetta' by Major Donald MacDonald to Lord Gordon in Scotland, struck with fine oval 'Ship Lre. / Crown / PORTSMOUTH' in black, initially charged at '10d.' and altered to '1/4d.' due on delivery (Dec 10). The letter recounts the death of Lt. Col. Gordon from dysentery and the gout. An extremely rare entire from the combined British & Ottoman Forces in Egypt, under General Abercromby, prior to the surrender of Alexandria by General Menou on September 2, 1801.

    1884 (Feb 23): Much readdressed cover to a Royal Irish Fusilier, originally mailed from London to Aldershot franked by GB 1 d. lilac (Gi. 172), thence to Rawalpindi and Lahore, India (April 10), returned via Aden (June 17) back to Cairo where 1884 Postage Due 10 pa. and 20 pa. red applied and tied (July 10). The Dues annulled by 'T' marking in black and the cover again forwarded to Suakin with faint cds on reverse and then returned back to Portsmouth. Remarkable and rare.

    1800 (Oct 13): Entire letter written 21 Vendemaire, Year 9, from Minie to Citizen Jean Louis E. Reynier (who fought at the Battle of the Pyramids and the Sieges of El Arish and Acre) struck with superb strike of BENESOUEF. handstamp of despatch in red. The letter itself being a resumé of a journey south reporting on the behaviour of the villages in between and the crops purchased and arrangements for them being sent to Cairo. Just ten examples of this handstamp are recorded, this being one of the finest. Rare.

Manuscript rating on reverse but no arrival marking as no datestamp is recorded from the opening of the Greek Office in November 1833 until 1858. An early commercial letter, Consular letters are known from 1834, coupled with an 1853 entire in the other direction rated 20 lepta on arrival.

    1801 (July 9): Entire letter written by Brigadier General Sir Eyre Coote to Rear Admiral Sir Richard Bickerton, dated 'July 9th' at top, stating in the letter 'I sent you yesterday a copy of the articles of convention, also a printed order from the Duke of York - I am of the opinion Menou will accept the terms' (of the surrender of Alexandria to the British). The letter is signed at base by Eyre Coote and endorsed on the envelope on front and with 'C' wax seal on reverse. Envelope with closed tear but of great historical importance.

    1905 (Feb 25): Official Post Office envelope sent registered from Paris to Egypt, damaged by water and struck on front with two line bilingual cachet in French and in English SAVED FROM THE WRECK OF THE S.S. CAIRO in violet, reclosed for sending after the incident and Type VI red Interpostal Seal 'Direzione Generale Delle Poste Khedevie Egiziane / Alessandria' applied on reverse. The S.S. Cairo ran aground on entering Alexandria on March 6, 1905 and the 51 mailbags were later salvaged.

Extremely rare, just 105 examples exist of each Nile Post = $ 600.

    Note: These sheets were unrecognised by the former owner, Ernest Kehr, and were discovered in 1997. The sheets were broken up in 2004.

    1889: OHMS deleted envelope endorsed 'On Active Service, No Stamps Available', mailed from a Captain Rawlinson in Halfa, Sudan (he was on Kitchener's staff) to Lady Rawlinson at the Hotel Angleterre in Cairo, taxed on arrival with 1888 Postage Due 2 m. green and a diagonally bisected example tied by Cairo datestamps (18/4) and deleted charge with 'T' marking. Forwarded on to the San Stefano Hotel where 1888 Postage Due 2 m. green and a diagonally bisected example were again applied and tied by SAN STEFANO / HOTEL datestamps (May 1). A very unusual cover.

The Egypt adhesive was unnecessary and presumably the sender chose the Italian P.O. for convenience and re-franked the letter there as either stamp was enough postage for the letter.
