    1861. Cancelled Stamps for Rowland Hill’s nephew Ormond Hill.rnOn 18 April 1861 Ormond Hill, the nephew of Rowland Hill, wrote to Joshua Butters Bacon the head of Perkins Bacon and Co.:rn“My dear Sir, Two or three of my friends who are collectors of Postage Stamps have asked me to procure for them specimens of new or uncommon stamps whenever I have it in my power. It occurs to me that perhaps you may be able to give me a few ...”rnHe added on 24 April:rn“... I should be glad to have six stamps of each kind ...”rnOn 15 August J. Upham (for J.B. Bacon) sent the stamps to Pearson Hill with the following letter:rn“Dear Sir, I beg now to send you as promised ... an envelope addressed to Ormond Hill Esq. containing 6 obliterated impressions of each of the stamps named in the list and request you will take two of each for Rowland Hill Esq. and yourself and then seal the package and forward it together with a letter which you will also find addressed to him, to Mr. Ormond Hill.”rnIt turned out that the supply of the Crown Agents‘ property was given without authority.rnOrmond Hill was not asked to return the "specimens“, and in fact, all were treated as private property. Large Star, imperforate, a fine four margin example with part "CANCELLED" obliterator in black; position 1 from the presumed block of six (3 x 2) sent to Ormond Hill, Peter Jaffe records and illustrates just three examples in the handbook, one ex John Ayre collection (lot 1026 , position 4 on the Jaffe proposed block of six) and the other (position 2) is housed in the collection of His Majesty King Charles III.     1932 (Dec 12): Pictorial ½ d. green, wmk. Multiple Script CA, perf. 12½, the famous unused block of four, variety "Imperforate between Vertically", wonderfully fresh and fine but for slightest blunting of perfs at right mentioned for full accuracy, full anmounted og. This is the multiple held by the original finder of the error in the 1930's which was retained by his wife until circa 1982. No example, as far as this describer is aware, in the collection of His Majesty King Charles III. Unique as multiple - just ten pairs can exist, and, as can be seen below, the only other unused pair is damaged, whilst a used pair is also catalogued by Stanley Gibbons. Cert. BPA (1987) Gi = £ 76'000+.rnNote: Richard Ashtons's original description read: "horizontal pair and block of four comprising three pairs of this previously unrecorded variety, the pair is defective at the lower left and has a small separation tear between at the top whilst the block is very fine apart from a few short perfs., unused unmounted o.g.; from a sheet format of 60 - ten horizontal rows of six, it is quite likely that only ten pairs of this variety ever exited.     1887/94: 2½ d. ultramarine, wmk. Crown CA, perf. 14, the 1893 printing, an unused vertical strip of three (positions 97 / 109 / 121), sheet marginal at left, with central stamp showing variety "Surcharge Double", of fine fresh colour and superb appearance, hinged for protection, small part og. A spectacular and beautiful positional example of this rare variety, undoubtedly the most attractive of the 6 examples possible, one being housed in the collection of His Majesty King Charles III. Cert. RPSL (1969) Gi = £ 25'000.rnNote: The overprint forme for the 2½d. consisted of ten rows of six impressions.     Matabeleland Campaign 1888: ½ d. vermilion used on overprinted 1½ d. grey-blue postal stationery card cancelled by "676" numeral obliterators with fine strike of "PALAPYE" cds at left (Dec 25, 1893) in black. The card addressed to Cranbrook, Kent with message "Xmas Day, 1893. Receeived letter from Brooksden on 23rd. Parcel did not arrive but they never come as quickly as letters. We are having a splendid Xmas here, most of us are having a good hard day's work and 50 tons of stores for the War will be in in a day or two to keep the thing up. Wishing you best wishes for the New Year. Give the card to Soo.". Cranbrook arrival (Jan 22) on reverse. The occupation of Matabeleland was over by December 1893, Jameson having entered Bulawayo on November 4th., Palapye is situated approximately half-way between Gaberone and Bulawayo. Rare.rnrnNote: It is possible that a coin was formerly affixed at top left of the card as a souvenir.

    1888: 3 d. lilac & black, a vertically bisected example used on famous 1904 cover top Maida Vale, London in combination with Protectorate 1902 ½ d. blue-green horizontal pair paying the correct 2½ d. rate, tied by neat strikes of "KANYE / BECHUANALAND" cds's in black (Dec 6, date slug inverted), the bisect signed underneath by "D. Solomon, P.M." as Postmaster. The reverse flap missing and paart address erased, reduced and reinstated. Nevertheless a magnificent cover - just four "Kanye" bisect covers are recorded: Two are available to collectors and bear halves of the same 3 d. adhesive; this cover and the one in the Danson & Inglefield-Watson collection (lot 1372), the others bear a bisected 4 d. value (Mosley collection, British Library) and a 1 s. value bisected (housed in the collection of His Majesty King Charles III).     Recess by De La Rue 1863: 1 d. on 6 d. in lake, imperforate, wmk. Crown CC, variety "ONE PENNY surcharge Omitted", an unused example of the famous "6d. lake" with large even margins all round, fresh rich colour, large part og. A magnificent example of this great rarity - whilst twelve examples should exist as the surcharging form (4 rows of twelve impressions) missed the lower horizontal row of the sheet, leaving this variety, the error also caused the variety on the row above: leaving the Surcharge doubled (Gi 3a). An outstanding example of this error, only recorded unused, just 6 examples have so far been recorded, one defective ex Lars Amundsen another example is housed in the collection of His Majesty King Charles III.     Recess by De La Rue 1863: 1 d. on 6 d. in lake, imperforate, wmk. Crown CC, variety "ONE PENNY surcharge Double", a used example (position 143) with large even margins on three sides, just shaved at base and imperceptible nick in left margin, fresh rich colour, cancelled red-brown and black manuscript ink. A fine example of this rarity - twelve examples should exist as the surcharging forme (4 rows of twelve impressions) missed the lower horizontal row of the sheet, leaving the "6d. lake" variety (Gi 3b), this error came from the row above: leaving the Surcharge doubled on this stamp.     Tati Concessions 1895 (Sept 30): Letter on Tati Concessions Limited headed paper, addressed to Messrs. Thomas De La Rue & Co., stating "Please to let your representatives call here any morning between 10 and 11 am., with reference to designing and supplying this company with Stamps", signed at base by a Mr. M. Clayden, company secretary of Tati Concessions. Some pencil notes made presumably upon the visit with "Original Pl(ate) - £ 20, Duty plate from origin(al) - £ 3, Working plates £ 1'060, 5'000 (stamps) - £ 10...". Photographic reproduction of the original hand-coloured unadopted Essay is attached to the letter. Oval framed "ST. HELENA" datestamp above (June 20), thence with "London / Paid" cds in red and Calais entry marking (July 18) in black. Marseille arrival cds (July 19) on reverse. Including an article by Hibbert from The Philatelist' (April 1970) where he conjectures the under-payment was due to the stamps all being of the same colour.     Overprinted by De La Rue 1897/1903: 2 d. grey-green & carmine, 3 d. purple on yellow and 1894 1 s. dull green all used on "Duty 4 d" on 3 d. brown postal stationery registered envelope and tied by "MOCHUDI / B.B." cds's in black (Nov 29, 1911) with Mafeking arrival cds on reverse of the same day. A rare usage - British Bechuanaland stamps remained valid in the Protectorate only, even after the formation of South Africa on 31 March 1910.     Tati Concessions 1888: Bechuanaland 1 d. on 1 d. lilac & black, wmk. Orb, perf. 14, the famous used example cancelled by "TATI / BECHUANALAND" circular datestamp (21 Aug 1888) in black. As Tati was not part of Bechuanaland this cancellation was altered immediately after this journey with "Bechuanaland" being erased. This stamp being used on the sole Southbound journey from Tati to Vryburg. Superb and of great rarity.rnNote: The Tati Postal Agency was opened on August 15, 1888 and on the first mail South, the stamps were pen-cancelled. The canceller used above was delivered to the Tati Agency srrived in time for the second post (Aug 21). As the Tati District was claimed by both Khama and Lobenguela, the word "Bechuanaland" was removed immediately after this mail.rnProvenance: Collection H.R.     De La Rue Surcharge Essays 1863: De La Rue Essays for the Surcharges on 1856 6 d. blue imperforate, with two single examples one very fine, the other with two large margins, each with sans-serif "FOUR PENCE" small Surcharge at base, the first in red with part og. the second in black (this last ex Southey collection) unused. Exceptionally rare.rnNote: Fourteen examples differing in type or surcharge colour were presented by the Crown Agents to the British Museum and now form part of the collection in the British Library. Seven examples are housed in the collection of His Majesty Charles III. H.R. Holmes in "The Postage Stamps of Bechuanaland" states, on page 35, "the largest piece (multiple) seen being a strip of three, even pairs are unusual".     Tati Concessions 1896: The set of six values from 1 s. - £ 5, wmk. Rosette, perf. 14, unused, all in blocks of twenty with margins at top and at base and the four higher values with sheet margin also at right; these being the De La Rue file copies with the 2 s. 6 d. indigo showing manuscript "1 Stamp Mr. Purcell 21/7/96" in pencil, adjoining "2 Stamps, Paris House, Cancelled 15/3/16" in red ink and, at base "One stamp, CA's book, 10/8/23" in black ink, all notations in the sheet margins. The 5 s., 10 s., £ 1 and £ 5 sheets with the De La Rue datestamp in margin "19 MAY 1896" in blue, sold together with an impressive Tati Concessions Company cheque, printed in red on pink, using the Elephant vignette, dated October 1954. Rare.

Just twelve examples can exist, two of which are housed in the collection of His Majesty King Charles III. Excellent quality and an extremely rare pair. Cert.
