1851/60: 6 d. yellow, one adhesive and a quadrisect, fresh and fine examples with good to large margins in vibrant colour, tied by black '1' numeral obliterator in an oval of bars to cover to London from the well known 'Miss Smith' correspondence, the envelope is endorsed "By Steamers via Halifax N.S.". Despatch "ST. JOHN N.B. PAID" two ring cds (April 30) and crisp arrival "LONDON PAID" cds (May 16, 60), both in red alongside the franking. Reverse with another despatch cds in black. Cover slightly shortened at left and top, roughly opened on reverse not distracting at all from the utmost attractiveness of this extremely rare franking, one of two known used quadrisects to the UK. Cert. Holcombe (1991). Gi = £ 42'000+.rnrnNote: The 7½ d. rate to the United Kingdom was in effect between August 1854 and the end of April 1860, when the new currency, the New Brunswick dollar was introduced with one dollar being equal to 5 shillings. As there had been no stamps with adequate face value, the 7½ d. rate to the UK had to be franked using either bisected 3 d. adhesives which is the more 'common' way with about 40 covers recorded or as in this case with quadrisected 6 d. adhesives, where only two covers are known. The other cover was ex Dale, Carnegie, Koh & Warren Wilkinson, a xerox of the last auction is added for documentation purposes.rnrnProvenance: Collection Louise Boyd Dale & Alfred F. This was combined with Austrian Levant 1864 Arms 10 s. blue paying the onward journey with the Lloyd vessel to Trieste, the adhesive tied by a light "ALEXANDRIEN 4 / 4" cds (Tranmer fig. 5, error in day slug). Reverse with "POSTE VICEREALI EGIZIANE ALESSANDRIA 5 APR. 66" transit and oval "TRIEST 11 / 4" arrival datestamp in red. Light horizontal file fold well away from the franking, nevertheless an exceptionally rare combination cover of Egypt and Austrian Levant. Signed G. Bolaffi, A. Bolaffi Ferchenbauer = € 15'000. rnNote: After October 1866, the Levant rate was unified to 15 soldi, thus the present item is underpaid by 5 soldi. In addition a so called 'zutaxe' was introduced like in Austria itself. The present cover was therefore taxed with 5 soldi due and 5 soldi zutaxe and the resulting 10 soldi were noted in blue crayon. However at some point or another the zutaxe was waived and the receiver had to pay only the five soldi missing.rnReference: A cover from the same correspondence but with the correct Lloyd rate is displayed and described in the Ferchenbauer handbook, part IV on page 588.
