Surcharged locally 1895 (Dec 19): '2½' in red on India 1 a. 6 p. sepia overprinted, a used example on 1895 cover to London tied by MOMBASA squared circle datestamp (Dec 20, 1895). Reverse with hooded London arrival (Jan 13, 1896) in red. It is interesting to note that the Danson, Rossiter and Minns collections collections possessed no examples of this adhesive on letter. British East Africa Protectorate 1895 (Nov 14): De La Rue "Appendix B" dated at upper right, the sheet now divided into two seperate halves, showing fifteen Imperforate Proofs, ¼ a. to 5 r., all with the curved Duty Plates beautifully hand-painted, all in issued colours except the 2½ a. in ultramarine - close to the issued colour of the 1 rupee, and the 1 rupee Proof in deep blue - the issued colour of the 2½ anna value. 1900 (July): De La Rue "Appendix" sheet with no less than twenty-two Imperforate Colour Trials: with 1 d. values (12) in a variety of colour combinations with the vignettes in dull purple, frames in colours ranging from olive, bright blue, red-brown and sepia; with the eventually chosen shades (1 d. dull purple & green and 1 d. dull purple & carmine-rose), being overlapped by top marginal examples of the Colour Trials to denote acceptance by the Protectorate's Postmaster General and ticked with red "Chosen" above; the balance of both the low values either deleted (7) or marked as per the existing colours of the 1897 issue with wonderful high values from 2 s. 6 d. to £ 10 at right.
