    Outgoing to the Ioninan Islands 1862: Partially prepaid cover from Pilos to Zante, franked with 1861 Paris print 40 l. mauve on blue and Athens fine impression 10 l. orange, of fine vivid colour, good margins but the 10 l. touched, each stamp tied by '26' numeral of Pilos. Despatch cds (April 13) with inverted year slug and Zakyntos arrival cds (Apr 26) in blue alongside. The 50 lepta franking paid the journey to the Zakynthos disembarkation harbour, the receiver had to pay '1' (penny) internal rate which was noted on front in red crayon. Attractive cover from Greece to the Ionian Islands, which were under British rule until 1864 Hellas 6a+12/IIa.

    Mail from Austria to Greece 1867: Entire letter sent unpaid from Vienna to Patras struck with 'Wien' cds (July 25) rated '15/10' in blue crayon (15 kr. by land, 10 kr. Lloyd ship fee = 25 kr. = 75 lepta), with 1862/67 5 l. green on greenish, 10 l. deep orange on very blued paper, and 80 l. carmine, torn corner, all tied by 'Patras' datestamps (July 19, julian) with corresponding '95' (lepta) unusually in ink at base of cover (inclusive of the 20 lepta local charge). Reverse with Triest oval datestamp (July 26) and Patras cds. The entire with faults but scarce - this rate was introduced with an Austria / Greek convention in October 1866 and lasted just 18 months.     Incoming from Great Britain 1867: Unpaid part letter sheet from Manchester to Syra with Manchester despatch cds (May 7) and Aachen rate handstamp '35' (van der Linden fig. 3187) plus handwritten '10' in blue crayon on front. On arrival charged with '155' lepta in blue crayon, franked with Consecutive Athens printings 5 l. green, 10 l. orange on blue, 20 l. sky-blue, 40 l. greyish-rose on grey-lilac and 80 l. rose-carmine, tied by Syros arrival cds's (May 3j). Franked on arrival with 1862/67 5 l. green on greenish with fault, 20 l. blue and 40 l. dull mauve on blued with 1868 80 l. bright carmine, tied by 'Patras' datestamps (Sept 4, julian). Reverse with Aachen transit in blue, Triest oval and Kerkyra transit datestamps. '145' (lepta) in red crayon on front - rate of 145 lepta under Greek / Austrian Convention of 1867. As always with the erroneously applied framed PD of the Greek Office alongside, on arrival charged with Cleaned Plates 1868/69 20 l. sky-blue, an irregularly cut single with parts of neighbouring stamp, but shaved at base, tied by arrival (Dec 13) cds. As the Russian franking paid only the journey to Constantinople, upon arrival in Hydra, the cover was charged with '45' lepta in blue crayon, franked with Consecutive Athens printings 5 l. olive-green and 40 l. mauve on greenish blue, both with fresh colours and good to large margins, tied by Piraeus arrival (Dec 20) cds. Cover with edge wear and vertical filing fold and two disinfection slits away from the stamps. An extremely rare franking combination, full of character and postal history content.     1593 (April) Doge Pasquale Cicogna, the 88. Doge of Venice (1585-1595): Eleven line Vellum manuscript starting with "Pascalis Ciconia dei gra(cia) dux Veneciensis ex fidelis" etc. with archive notes on top and bottom: 'die faeta fuit mano' (acknowledged by hand). Although the official lead seal is missing, a fine early document. One of his greatest successes was converting the Rialto Bridge, one of Venice's major landmarks and the only bridge over the Grand Canal of Venice, from wood to stone between 1588 and 1591.

    1653 (May 27): Doge Francesco Cornaro or Corner (1585 – 1656) the 101. Doge of Venice: Vellum manuscript addressed to Michele Morosini e Griolamo Grimani, Podesta and Capitaneo of Verona, written and signed by the official secretary Nicolo Padavin. Although the official lead seal is missing, a fine early document with attached transcription on Cert. Bolaffi ( 2000). The reign of Cornaro as Doge was the shortest of any Doges. He was elected on 17 May 1656 and died only a few weeks later, on 5 June 1656.
