Two line VIA DI / CHIASSO in red and 'Autriche / Beau. Fr. 2 De Bale' entry marking at right in red (April 20) and Paris arrival on reverse where locally redirected.     1860: Cross of Savoy ½ tornese blue, the famous used example showing large part unidentified watermark (not from the Fleur-de-Lys or Bonaventura Tajani paper), with large even margins all round and of excellent colour, cancelled by large part 'Napoli' circular datestamp in black. The first stamp of this type ever located, the stamp featuring in an article by Emilio Diena in 'Il Corriere Filatelico' in 1934, there are now approximately six stamps with this watermark known: this being the finest so far recorded.     1857: 40 c. blue, a wonderful vertical strip of four with large margins all round, positions 41 / 49 / 57 / 65 on the sheet of 72 subjects; thus third stamp with narrow '0' in '40' (Type II), used on 1859 cover to France, tied by 'Pontremoli' datestamp (Feb) and by two further 'PD' handstamps in black. Further 'PD' below and VIA DI / SARZANA route marking in black. French 'Sardaigne-Culoz' entry marking in red (Feb 6) all on front, the reverse with Sarzana cds (Feb 3), Genova cds and Macon arrival cds (Feb 7). Slight stain well below the adhesives and of no significance, noted in Sassone rarities listing (item 12), a truly fantastic cover of great rarity (Colla: 'le più importanti lettere di questo Ducato') in lovely quality for the philatelic connoisseur.     1859: 50 grana chocolate brown', a superb example used with 20 gr. slate-grey 'grigio ardesia', used on small 1859 envelope from Messina to Paris neatly tied in black, with framed 'P.D.' at right in black and Messina despatch datestamp (April 24) at base. Reverse with opening flap missing but with 'Marseille-Paris' cds (April 27). An exceptional franking, illustrated in Nino Aquila 'Il Francobolli del Ultimo Re' on page 282 (Aquila records just two covers with this spectacular franking to France) and just four covers in all with a 70 grana rate. An extremely rare usage of the 50 grana on letter in outstanding quality on a most attractive cover, without doubt one of the most important items of classic Sicily recorded. Signed A. Bolaffi, G. Bayonne transit and Lisbon arrival (March 29) cds's on reverse. A very early and interesting cover to a very rare destination. Prior to the Franco-Papal Postal Convention of 1 October 1853 mail could only be paid to the Papal border while the addressee had to for the residual journey.

    Cirenaica 1934 (Jan.23): Registered envelope franked with complete set of overprinted special issue in combination with issues of  General Colonies (4) of 2 L. 25, all tied by "POSTA AEREA (BENGASI) 23.1.34" and backstamped  with special cachet "ROMA 28.1.34", showing on reverse flight cachet as well as boxed "Perduta coincidenza / primo volo postale / Roma Buenos Ayres" in red. Due delay of the connection flight to Rome they missed the plane which left Rome Jan. 27th, the 'Perduta' special cachet had been applied on the corresponding mail Longhi 3085 = € 1'200, Sassone GP74, € 2'250 for the complete set.

Feb. 34" arrival mark. An extremely rare cover. Note: Longhi states only two covers known with Italian adhesives in mixed franking with the complete airmail set. Presumably despatched from the same sender as the Italian envelope with mixed franking and the registration handstamp 'R-00398' offered in this sale, of which Longhi states the only known mixed franking with Italian stamps and complete airmail set of Tripolitania.
