1893 (July 26): Essay prepared by De La Rue for proposed 5 s. value, based on Colonial standard universal key-plate as used for Gambia etc. with stamp in carmine and country name CYPRUS hand-painted in blue with pencil guide lines still apparent, the 5 s. Duty Plate being entirely hand-painted in Chinese White on pale blue lined background. The Crown Agents turned down the proposal on August 20, 1893.
