    1893 (July 26): Essay prepared by De La Rue for proposed 5 s. value, based on Colonial standard universal key-plate as used for Gambia etc. with stamp in carmine and country name CYPRUS hand-painted in blue with pencil guide lines still apparent, the 5 s. Duty Plate being entirely hand-painted in Chinese White on pale blue lined background. The Crown Agents turned down the proposal on August 20, 1893. Illustrated in 'The De La Rue Collection' edited by Frank Walton RDP on page 2644 and in Wilfrid Castle's 'Cyprus'. A magnificent and beautiful Essay: unique.
