1861: Washington 10 c. yellow-green, used on cover from Washington to Guatemala, dated 19 March 1862, tied by Washington DC circular datestamp in black dated 20 March, with charge mark "2" in blue alongside. The envelope is addressed to "Hon. E. D. Crosby" (Elisha Oscar Crosby) and contains an extensive letter, headed up "Washington March 19th, 1862", contains interesting historical content relating to President Abraham Lincoln; ".....Mr. Lincoln will get the nomination at the Republican Convention which assembles in Blatimore in June or I will confess that I am politically blind. 13 State Legislators have already passed resolutions favouring his re-election and think they express the voice of the people, and if nominated his election is a certainty, beyond all question. Which is more than can be said for any other aspirant...."; the two page handwritten letter is signed; 'Sam' N. Hilton'; a wonderful snapshot into US politics during the American Civil War period. Christa McAuliffe on airmail envelope franked with vert. pair of 'Health Research' 20c. tied by KSC machine cancel (Jan. 28 AM), bearing special cancels 'First Shuttle /"Pad B" Launch' in black and '25th Space / Shuttle Launch / Mission 51-L' in violett alongside. Very Fine. McAuliffe was chosen among 11,000 applicants to be the first teacher in space and had been scheduled to conduct two classes while in space. Greg Jarvis signature was added later, by someones other hand just to be ment to complete the crew signatures, as Jarvis was a late addition to the flight. An over-payment of the double 2 x 4 c. US rate. Charged at French triple rate with '15' décimes due marking in black on arrival (Aug 31). Slight imperfections to reverse with top flap missing but a rare usage of this short-lived fancy cancellation. FR. H No. 1" datestamp (Dec 11) struck in red (Salles fig. 1713). Both these cancellations deleted in manuscript, as was the adhesive, when the cover was forwarded unpaid to EGYPT with "Forwarded By / Drexel Harjes & Co. / Paris" cachet in blue. French P.O. in Alexandria arrival cds (Jan 9, 1870) in black and charged there on arrival with '6' décimes handstruck in black. Apollo 11 - 1969 (July 20): ‘Type 1' Lunar Landing insurance cover imprinted cachet of lunar surface activities, postmarked at Houston on July 20, 1969, the moon landing date of the Lunar Module Eagle, signed by Neil Armstrong, Michael Collins and Buzz Aldrin. These historic covers were flown to Houston after launch for cancellation by Apollo 10 Commander Tom Stafford in his T-38 jet. In very fine condition. The famous insurance covers, first produced for Apollo 11, were to provide financial security for astronauts' families in case of disaster. Apollo 15 - 1971 (July 26): Cacheted postal cover honouring the Apollo 15 mission insignia, franked with Moon landing special issue tied by Kennedy Space Center date of launch slogan machine cancel, signed at top left in black “Landed at Hadley Moon, July 30, 1971 Dave Scott, and Jim Irwin and also signed in the lower left corner by Dave Scott, Al Worden and Jim Irwin, backstamped "USS Okinawa Aug. 7 1971 AM". On reverse with typed and notarized inscription: “This is to certify that this cover was on board the Falcon at the Hadley-Apennine, Moon, July 30–August 2, 1971” and is notary stamped and signed 'Mrs. C. B. Carsey', below stamped "H.W. Sieger" and signed by him with a handwritten serial number '#058'. In very fine condition. The Hadley–Apennine is a region on the near side of Earth's Moon that served as the landing site for the Apollo 15 mission, the fourth crew landing on the Moon.They explored the area using the first lunar rover, which allowed them to travel much farther from the Lunar Module lander than had been possible on missions without the rover.
