    British Post Offices 1874 (April 23): Cover from Pernambuco to Buenos Ayres, Argentina endorsed "pr. Ingles" and carried on the RMSP Steamer "Douro", franked by Great Britain 1858/59 2 d. blue pl. 14, two examples, tied by "C82" obliterator in black with "Pernambuco" code A datestamp of despatch (April 23) on reverse. Internal docketing of receipt (May 7). A few wrinkles but scarce.

La Plata", franked by Great Britain 1858/59 2 d. blue pl. 13, faded 1867/73 3 d. rose pl. 6 and 1867/73 1 s. green pl. 4 all tied by "C83" obliterators in black with "Rio De Janeiro / Paid" cds of despatch (Jan 22) in red below. 'London / Paid' transit (Feb 20) and circular 'PD' also tying the 1 s. adhesive in red. Reverse with Harburg arrival (Feb 22) in black. Illustrated in Edition D'Or 59 on page 78. Lines not covered by the 1853 British Convention and the 1860 French Convention carried mail at the following rates: to La Plata - 100 reis, to and from France - 200 reis, to and from Great Britain - 240 reis and from Portugal - 300 reis.rnrn1868 (Aug 13): Entire letter from Rio de Janeiro to Buenos Ayres (La Plata), endorsed "per City of Brussels" (Tait & Co. Steamer), franked by 1866 Dom Pedro 100 r. green tied by sunburst segmented cork handstamp in black with "Rio de Janeiro" datestamp alongside (Aug 13). Charged on arrival in blue manuscript "2/4" for a mail between 4 and 8 adarmes. Illustrated in Edition D'Or 59 on page 79.     Unsubsidised Maritime Lines 1873 (Nov 17): Entire letter from Rio de Janeiro to Buenos Ayres, endorsed "P. Liffey" (RMSP), carried at triple rate (note '3' in manuscript) and franked by 1866 Dom Pedro 10 r. vermilion, 50 r. blue, 100 r. green and 500 r. orange all tied by segmented cork handstamp in black with French type "Rio-De-Janeiro" cds alongside (Nov 17). Illustrated in Edition D'Or 59 on page 79. The 100r. crossed by file fold but a charming and rare four colour franking.

    Unsubsidised Maritime Lines 1873 (Jan 8): Cover from Rio de Janeiro to Guernsey, Channel Islands endorsed "p. Ebro" (RMSP) franked by 1850 180 r. black with large margins all round and 1866 Dom Pedro 20 r. red lilac single and horizontal pair tied by sunburst segmented cork handstamps in black. "Rio de Janeiro" despatch cds (Jan 8) at left. "Ship Letter / London" cds in red and Guernsey arrival cds on reverse (Feb 7) in black and charged '6' (pence) to pay in manuscript. Illustrated in Edition D'Or 59 on page 80. Imperfections to envelope at top but mails paying this 240 reis rate are very rare. Donati" (a Steamer of the Lamport & Holt / Booth Line), franked by 1866 Dom Pedro 20 r. red lilac horizontal pair, vertical crease, and single 200 r. black tied by segmented cork handstamp in black. "Rio de Janeiro" cds alongside (March 29) of transit. Reverse with "Ship Letter / London" cds (April 30) and further London datestamp in black, charged '6' (pence) to pay upon receipt in manuscript.     1869. Pacific Steam Navigation Company (PSNC), this famous line had advantages, having dominated Pacific Coast mail for 30 years. Calling at Bordeaux, the PSNC became an alternative to the Messageries Impériales, the RMSP and the Booth Line.rnrn1870 (Jan 16): Opened for display cover from Porto Alegre via Rio to Meta, near Naples, Italy endorsed "Italia via Southampton" at top and carried on the PSNC Steamer "Arauvania", franked at single rate with 1866 20 r. red lilac and 200 r. black in a horizontal pair tied by superb strikes of circular handsatamp in black with "Porto Alegre" despatch cds in black on obverse and thence by coastal ship to Rio de Janeiro with cds (Jan 25) in blue. Framed "P.P." in red on front showing erroneous acceptance of under-payment (rate should have been 860 reis). "Brésil / Bordeaux" entry marking (Feb 22) and charged on arrival '24' décimes in manuscript with "12" handstamp deleted. Nevertheless, on arrival in Meta (Feb 27) the cover was charged with Italy 1870 Postage Due 40 c. strip of three. Illustrated in Edition D'Or 59 on page 82.     1835 (Nov 12): Entire letter from Rio de Janeiro to St. Petersburg, Russia; carried privately to London where struck with oval framed "FORWARDED BY / BARING BROTHERS & Co. / LONDON" in red and manuscript note "A/c Wallenstein" at left (senders). Prepaid '1/8d.' in red manuscript and thence via Hamburg with City Post marking on reverse and HAMBURG two line datestamp (Jan 23) in black on obverse with '4' schilling in manuscript. Further manuscript rates on flap. Illustrated in Edition D'Or XXXVII on page 115. The earliest recorded letter from Brazil to Russia and believed to be the earliest from any South American country.rnProvenance: Collection Reinhold Koester.

    1836 (Feb 16): Letter from New York to Valparaiso, endorsed "per Douglass via Rio", with framed "FORWARDED / BY / BIRCKHEAD & Co. / Rio de Janeiro" cachet struck in red on flap. Presumably thence via Magellan Straits to Valparaiso and sent on to Lima with "Rec'd Lima 16 Junio" in manuscript. The 'Lima' in the address has been erased.

    1844 (April 14): Entire letter from Lagoa Santa, Minas Gerais to Throndheim, Norway carried as a Consignee's letter to Forwarding Agent in Altona (address deleted in transit), mailed from Altona with datestamp in black on reverse and "SCHIFFS BRIEF / HAMBURG" datestamp in black (July 17) with a variety of manuscript rates alongside the two datestamps. Illustrated in Edition D'Or XXXVII on page 117. The earliest recorded entire from Brazil to Norway.

    RMSP 1855: Cover from Manchester to Bahia, Brazil at double rate endorsed "p. R.M. Str. Great Western via Southampton", franked by 18548/54 Embossed 6 d. violet in a vertical strip of four, touched to fair margins, all tied by "Manchester / 498" sideways duplexes (April 7) in black with a further complete strike on reverse. Taxed on arrival with manuscript "480" reis to pay. Illustrated in Edition D'Or 59 on page 87. Lower flap missing, some wrinkles and small paper repair on the lower right corner but a very rare usage of an Embossed 6 d. multiple.     RMSP 1869: Cover from London to Rio de Janeiro endorsed "via Southampton", franked by 1864/79 1 d. red pl. 92 (4) and 1858/76 2 d. blue pl. 12 in a horizontal strip of four, tied by London duplexes (July 9). Carried on the RMSP "Douro" with Rio de Janeiro arrival cds (July 31) in blue on reverse and "140" reis in manuscript due. The cover with pin holes at left and was probably used in evidence in a Court case or judicial document with 1869 Dom Pedro Fiscal 200 r. green & red applied and tied in manuscript in 1870. Illustrated in Edition D'Or 59 on page 87. The adhesives with faults but a most unusual cover. Cert. B. Moorhouse (2006).

    Messageries Impériales 1873: Cover from Birkenhead to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil endorsed "via Southampton", franked by defective 1867/80 1 s. green pl. 6 tied by 'Birkenhead / 74' duplex (Nov 7). Endorsement ignored, struck with INSUFFICIENTLY / STAMPED as considered double rate, and sent via Calais (Nov 10) and struck in Paris with framed Convention marking "F/20" in black (Van der Linden fig. 1139). Carried on Paquebot "Rio Grande" and charged "700" reis due in blue manuscript (believed unique thus) in Rio (Dec 14) with cds of arrival. Illustrated in Edition D'Or 59 on page 88. Carried by the "Atrato" to St. Thomas and thence by the "Tyne" to Colon. Double arc PANAMA cds below (March 11) in black. Internal docketing of receipt (March 29).
