Struck on front with bilingual octagonal framed SAMPLE POST / OR LETTER PACKET / PASSED BY / CUSTOMS P.O. in red; slightly over-lapped by glued label with typed French "RETOUR / vu l'absence de l'exchange' tied in black by cyrillic (?) datestamp with 'Expedition' at base.     Incoming from Bohemia & Moravia under German Occupation 1940 (Aug. 27): Registered Express envelope from Prague to Canton, China franked with left marginal 1939 definitive 20 k. orange brown (Michel 37), tied by bilingual "PRAG PRAHA 82" cds, with corresponding registration label as well as Airmail and Express labels alongside, endorsed "Mit Luftpost über BERLIN-MOSKAU", Soviet VOZDUSHNAYA (Airmail) handstamp and Canton arrival cds alongside, handwritten note "no such person / Retour", reverse with "CANTON 11.10.40.10" and SUNTONG cds's, returned to the sender, censored twice by the Germans upon despatch and return to Prague as well as by the British in Hong Kong and Egypt with corresponding censor strips on reverse and Egyptian censor handstamp on front. The cover was mailed via Russia in the time period between the HMolotov - Ribbentrop Treaty of August 1939 and Operation Barbarossa, the German attack on the Soviet Union in June 1941, it was mailed via Russia to avoid British censorship. Interesting and appealing item.
