    1870 (Sept 18): Cover and complete original contents mailed from Paris to Nice, either a letter smuggled from Paris (lettre passée par passeur) as Paris was completely surrounded by this date but more probably carried on the 1st Ballon 'Neptune', franked by pair of laureated 20 c. blue for double rate with PARIS / R. ST. LAZARE cds in black (Sept 18). Reverse with 'Nice' arrival cds (Sept 24, third levée) in black - the 'Neptune' arrivals are recorded between Sept 23-25. Opening tears at top but a rare entire.

    1871/75: Cérès 1 c. bronze on green (a staggering 22 examples) used with 2 c. red-brown (2) on 1876 'window pane' franking addressed rto Geay, Charente all tied by '2608' gros chiffres of La Roche-Sur-Yon in black with despatch cds alongside (Feb 27). Reverse with arrivals and manuscript 'Inconnue à Geay' with circular 'Mairie de Geay' cachet in blue adjacent. Some minor edge wear and 1 centime overpaid but a remarkable and most attractive franking.

    1871/75: Cérès 80 c. carmine - no less than 155 examples - including a block of 39 and another of 38 stamps, used with 5 c. green, 10 c. brown on rose, 15 c. bistre and a pair of 25 c. blue all on 1874 large registered front of cover to London, cancelled by '6316' gros chiffres of Lyon (Les Terreaux) in black for a rate totalling 124 francs 75 centimes (!). Red framed 'rate box' of despatch and oval 'Registered / London' arrival in red (Oct 16) Many stamps with defects and heavily creased and folded but a truly astonishing franking for the connoisseur of Postal History.

    Circuit of Mediterranean Flight 1926: Cover carried by French Pilot Hirschauer in a Morance-Saulnier 122, franked with Sower 40 c. cancelled in Paris on May 20, thereafter each stage marked by adhesives from different countries: Rabat, Morocco (May 27), Algeria, Tripoli, Libya (June 21), landing at Aboukir on June 25 with Egypt 1923 15 m. blue tied by 'Continental Savoy / Cairo' cds (June 26), Beirut, Lebanon and Turkey with 10 g. tied by Aya Stefano cds.     Survey Flight to Madagascar 1926: Cover flown on Survey Flight by Seaplane carried by, and signed by the Pilot Guibault, with Pasteur 1 fr. 50 c. blue tied on despatch by Berre cds (Oct 11) and circular 'Aviation Maritime / Berre' anchor cachet at left. Framed cachet VOYAGE AÉRIEN / FRANCE-MADAGASCAR in violet at top and the complete route under-taken shown by individual datestamps of Tangier, Casablanca, Las Palmas / Canarias (16/10), Port Etienne, St. Louis / Senegal, Bamako, Segou, Gao / Soudan Français (Oct 29), Gaya, Lokoja / Nigeria (Nov 4) - where the Seaplane broke down. The flight continued in January 1927 and reverse struck with Lokoja cds (Jan 19), Fort Archambault, Bangui, Lisala Kindu, Albertville (Feb 1), Mwanza, Jinja, Malakal, Dongola from where Guilbault turned North again with further transits of 'Winter Palace / Luqsor', Alexandria, Beyrouth, Fethie, Constantinople, Argostolian, Malta and 'Saint Raphael / Var' eventual arrival cds (March 7). An astonishing cover with 27 different cancels and extremely rare with just 7 items flown. Muller 162.

    Telegraphs 1868: The wonderful imperforate group, with unused, without gum, irregular blocks / strips: 25c. rose in a block of 36 with one used with blue datestamp (Maury 1 = € 13'670), 50c. green in a superb corner block of 11 (Maury 2 = € 3'740), 1fr. orange in a strip of 11 (ten + one) and 2fr. violet both marginal from top of sheet (Maury 3 = € 14’300 and Maury 4 = € 14’300), with complete original and contemporary envelope explaining the reason for the multiples (the translation follows: “These stamps are very rare - all are definite authentication. They have been given to me about 1880 by Hericart de Thury, previous head of the Accounts Office of the Telegraph Administration, who received them formerly for giving specimens to foreign Administrations who had asked for them and who saved them from the pillage of the Siege and the Commune 1870-71 (Signature)”. An extraordinary set - as far as we are aware, the sole recorded examples of interpanneau strips of this issue, as the sheets were separated prior to being supplied to the Posts & Telegraph Offices.
