    Multiple Watermark 1930 (Aug 2): Sideface 4½ d. violet, Die II, Multiple Crown over A wmk., perf. 13½ x 12½, Plate 3, an unused horizontal pair divided by interpanneau margin, showing "JOHN ASH" imprint (N over N), of excellent centering and fresh colour, light typical crease in interpanneau margin, slightly browned unmounted og. This pair, formerly a block of four (cut in the learly 1980's), emanates probably from a presentation set given to or by the Postmaster General or from the sheet inadvertenly sold to Miller Bros (for a full description see Brusden White pages 4/346-347). An immense rarity, believed to be the sole remaining Imprint pair. Unique and one of the truly iconic items of Australian Commonwealth philately. Cert.     1919: First Aerial Post blue perforated vignette with India ½ a. green and 1 a. carmine, used on First Flight cover from India to Australia flown by Ross and Keith Smith, the cover addressed to Melbourne, tied by oval "FIRST AERIAL MAIL / GREAT BRITAIN TO AUSTRALIA / RECEIVED" datestamp (26 Feb 1920) with information strike at right and three line "PER / VICKERS "VIMY" AEROPLANE / TO AUSTRALIA" in watery violet. The cover is signed by the co-Pilot "Keith Smith" at upper left and is one of very few picked up en route in India. A great rarity and without doubt one of the finest Ross Smith Flight covers recorded.rnrnNote: In 1919 the Australian government offered a prize of £A10,000 for the first Australians in a British aircraft to fly from Great Britain to Australia. Smith and his brother Keith, Sergeant James Mallett Bennett and Sergeant Wally Shiers, flew from Hounslow Heath Aerodrome, England on 12 November 1919 in a Vickers Vimy, eventually landing in Darwin Australia on 10 December, taking less than 28 days, with an actual flying time of 135 hours.The four men shared the £10,000 prize money put forward by the Australian government.rnrnProvenance: Spink, London, 17 Oct 2003, lot 760

    The Postmaster General, Josiah Thomas (served in this capacity from1908-11), announced a public design competition would be held to obtain suitable designs for the new Australia postage stamps. The announcement was made, along with the rules for the competition in the Australian Gazette on January 21, 1911. Designs were received from 533 entrants at the closing date on May 31, with 1051 designs proferred anonymously, competing for a £100 first prize and two further prizes of £50. Designs not selected were returned to the entrants.rnrnStamp Design Competition 1911: 'Blot' Essay in green for proposed ½ d. value, hand-painted on thick card (105 x 117 mm.) marked 'No. 1' in manuscript in shades of pale and deep green, with three quarter portrait of George V flanked by eucalyptus trees; the value frame very similar to that adopted for the Sideface issue.     1913: De La Rue Die Proof for the 1 d. value printed in grey-black on stamp sized glazed thick card paper (25 x 32 mm.) with black surround, Stage 9, with design completed including addition of AUSTRALIA and POSTAGE with head on horizontally lined background, Wattles completed but with spur on head and back of head retouched. Rare and splendid Proof, Perkins Bacon sub-contracted the work to De La Rue (as apparent from these Proofs which were sold from their archives in 1976); this Proof being on the glazed white card is typical of their Die Proofs produced for Great Britain and the Commonwealth. The progressive Proofs were then returned to Perkins Bacon for inspection and completion. Unique. Cert.     Concentration Camp Mail 1918: 'Service des prisonniers de Guerre' Prisoner of War / Free printed envelope mailed to the Concentration Camp at Holdsworthy, NSW cancelled by fine strike of "MOLONGLO DEFENCE CAMP / N.S.W." cds (June 15) with Censor cachet at left signed by one Capt. Leo G. Casey. Sender's details on reverse "Grete Mueller, Molonglo Concentration Camp, via Queanbeyan, Federal Territory". The Molonglo Concentration Camp was built in just three months to house 3'500 German and Austrian nationals being expelled from China. However they never arrived at the Camp and 150 inmates of the Internement camp at Bourke were housed here along with some families from Berrima Jail.
