    1840: Second sheet of entire letter addressed to Miss (Anne) Elphinstone, dated on obverse '18th March 1840' and addressed to Enfield, Middlesex, the letter being written and signed by General William G. Keith Elphinstone (1782-1842), the unfortunate Commander in charge of the British Empire's greatest defeat - the retreat from Kabul and the ensuing masssacre of much of his Force during the First Afghan War in 1842. The cover bears an oval INDIA handstamp in red and was charged 2/8d. due upon receipt, backstamped 'MEERUT / Paid' in red with date in manuscript, alongside London arrival cds (May 8) in red. A scarce and most interesting cover of some historical importance (he was unwell when he wrote this letter and remained so for the next two years) with full transcript which accompanies the lot.

    1849 (May 4): Entire letter from Bellary to Maidstone, kent with fascinating content: "What excitement the Battle of Chillianwallah seems to have created in England. It certainly was a dreadful slaughter to no purpose. The Battle of Goojerat which you have heard of before this was a very different affair and only shows what Lord Gough might have done if he had made proper use of his Artillery in his former battles...I doubt however if the war (Second Anglo-Sikh War) would have been concluded so soon if it had not been for the skill and capacity with which Sir W. Gilbert followed up...Sir Charles Napier arrived too late..." the letter goes on to state that war in China was possible as the "Chinese may open Canton". Struck with boxed and dated "BELLARY / Paid" with mss. 'to Madras', Madras GPO' transit (May 8) and Maidstone arrival (June 28) in blue and charged 1s. due. A remarkable historical entire that opens well for display.
