1849 (May 4): Entire letter from Bellary to Maidstone, kent with fascinating content: "What excitement the Battle of Chillianwallah seems to have created in England. It certainly was a dreadful slaughter to no purpose. The Battle of Goojerat which you have heard of before this was a very different affair and only shows what Lord Gough might have done if he had made proper use of his Artillery in his former battles...I doubt however if the war (Second Anglo-Sikh War) would have been concluded so soon if it had not been for the skill and capacity with which Sir W. Gilbert followed up...Sir Charles Napier arrived too late..." the letter goes on to state that war in China was possible as the "Chinese may open Canton". Struck with boxed and dated "BELLARY / Paid" with mss. 'to Madras', Madras GPO' transit (May 8) and Maidstone arrival (June 28) in blue and charged 1s. due. A remarkable historical entire that opens well for display.
