Sarawak 1856/64: India 2 a. yellow, 8 a. pale carmine and 1860 8 p. purple on white used on 1864 cover from Sarawak addressed to Miss Burdett Coutts in London endorsed 'via Marseilles' , tied by nine barred obliterator twice in black and over-struck by octagonal "B/172" in black applied in Singapore. Double ring "POST OFFICE / SARAWAK" handstamp at left with manuscript '28/12/64' date inserted in ink, the 2 a. also tied by London datestamp in red. Reverse with 'SINGAPORE / P.O.' transit in red and London arrival cds (Feb 15). A wonderful cover and surely one of the finest and most significant of all Sarawak classic period covers.rnrnNote: The Rajah of Sarawak, James Brooke needed money to 'create' the country of Sarawak and he struck up a relationship with Miss Angela, later Baroness Burdett Coutts, at the time the richest heiress in England; a relationship detailed in the letters of Brooke and Miss Coutts from 1859 onwards available in book form published in 1935. Their correspondence continued unabated until his death in 1868. To quote Robert Payne from "The White Rajah of Sarawak", Brooke met Miss Coutts at a party hosted by Queen Victoria "Born to great wealth, she was determined to use her money as a weapon to advance her humanitarian ideas, and when the Rajah spoke to her about the Dyaks and Malays plagued by their feudal Sultans and by Ilanun pirates, still living in the Middle Ages, her heart went out to them" (and, allegedly, to Brooke himself, although rumours also abounded on Brooke's homosexuality). rnrnProvenance: Christie's, Singapore, 26 March 1994, lot 1242.

1857/58: 1 s. green on thin blued (azure) paper, a horizontal pair used with 1858 1d. rose-red, plate 60, letterd CB and 2d. blue plate 5, EI, cancelled with '50' London Chief Office barred numeral on 16 April 1858 cover endorsed "via Grey Town" to the Postmaster General Francisco Echeverria in San Jose, Costa Rica with ms. docketing 'Recibo Mayo 23/58' on reverse. Despite the rare destination, the 1 s. on azure paper is a great rarity, as only a very small print run of the 1s. was carried out on the azure paper. The Karl Louis Card Index records one similar cover with the same franking from the same correspondence and just eight more covers, threreof six single frankings, a pair (N.P.M.London). Typical tropicalisation slightly toning adhesives and envelope (cleaned staining) due to destination, but a great rarity in regard of Postal History (destination) and Traditional Philately of the Surface Printed Issues (Azure Paper). Cert. RPSL (2020) Gi = £ 4'000+ for two single 1s. off cover.rnRemarks: Intensive research has been undertaken with regard to the chemical paper ingredients responsible for the blueing of the 1s. azure paper by X-ray flourescence spectroscopy by comparing the blueing of 4d. and 6d. adhesives from the 1855/58 issue with the 1s. The results show very similar diagram results of the chemical contents of the blued paper (copies of the diagrams attached with the lot).  rn

Kelpie" (Paddle Steamer - it should be noted here that Victoria covers with inland Steamer's endorsements are rarities in themselves) addressed to George Langford Esq. in Echuca, tied by "JKM 10.2.69" in possibly embellished manuscript (James McCulloch) with laureated Victoria 2 d. violet tied by numeral "40" obliterator of Echuca at right. Reverse with 'Echuca / Victoria' cds in black of receipt (Feb 10,1869) in black. Closed tear at top of envelope and slight stain on perfs. at the top of the 3 d. adhesive mentioned for full accuracy, the sole recorded example of this issue on letter and a choice rarity for the philatelic connoisseur. 1884 (Feb 29): 1 d. red, three used examples on the famous 1885 cover to Kingston, Canada, in combination with Cape of Good Hope 1 d. rose-red in a block of twelve (6 x 2), the Stellaland adhesives cancelled "Vryburg / 26-6-85 / Stellaland / J.W. Eaton, Postmaster" in violet crayon manuscript with the Cape block cancelled by five strikes of the BARKLY / G.W. datestamps (27 June) in black, both the Cape and Stellaland adhesives also being cancelled by the Canadian arrival datestamp (Aug 3) in black. Reverse with minor flap fault and small cover tear of no significance, "2½d." credit marking in red, Cape Town cds, London transit cds in red (July 21) and Kingston arrival cds (Aug 3) in black. An outstanding cover - the sole recorded usage of Stellaland stamps being tied to a cover by a cancellation other than a manuscript usage, the sole recorded usage of a Stellaland multiple franking and the sole recorded Stellaland cover to a destination outside Africa. A wonderful cover, initially found by the late E.W.Proud. See the article in the 'London Philatelist', March 1992 on page 101:58, this being cover #6 of the 13 listed in the Dr. Drysdall census. Incoming from France 1927 (Jan 19): Cover from Nice, France bearing sower 25 c. blue (2) and 50 c. red in a horizontal pair, tied by machine cancel, directed to Colonel Bailey at "The Residency, Gangkok Sikkim, Les Indes Orientales", but missent to Siam with Gangtok being misread as Bangkok. There it received a superb strike of the most uncommon framed "MISSENT TO BANGKOK" handstamp in black, with Bangkok cds (Feb 12) on reverse. The cover was then forwarded through and backstamped at Singapore (Feb 18), Calcutta (March 20), Tista Bridge (border between Darjeeling and Sikkim, March 22), to Gangtok where it was neatly re-adressed to Yatung, Tibet, where it received an arrival cds of March 23. At some time, presumably in Singapore the address was erroneously embellished "Philippine Is" in blue crayon which resulted in another detour and collecting another uncommon instructional mark, a framed "NOT FOR PHILIPPINES" in carmine-red. A fascinating doubly misrouted cover with most uncommon markings and of striking appearance.

1906 (Oct 1): Labuan 2 c. on 8 c. black & vermilion, perf. 13½, overprinted 'BRUNEI.' in red, an unused vertical strip of ten, with sheet margin at top and at base, fourth stamp showing "L" for "I" in BRUNEI, fifth stamp showing variety "Overprint TWO CENTS Double", the tenth stamp with variety "TWO CENTS Omitted", protective hinge between third and fourth stamps, large part or unmounted og., superbly fresh and fine with just one sheet printed thus: therefore only 10 examples of each error can exist - of which two examples of each from the first two columns of the sheet are housed in the collection of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, and thus only 8 are in private hands. A magnificent and rare multiple. Cert. Holcombe (1998) Gi = £ 29'200+.rnrnNote: The surcharge was made from a Setting of 50 in two operations, one sheet had a misplacement of the Plate resulting in the fifth row receiving a second surcharge and the tenth row receiving none. The "L" flaw was probably the result of an extraneous piece of metal on the Plate.rnrn

1859/1875: Collection of forty-seven 'insufficiently prepaid' letters from Great-Briatin to France originating from all parts of Britain written up on self made pages.. The collection contains both a correctly franked item erroneously treated as "INSUFFICIENTLY PREPAID", as well as underfranked letters. This collection demonstrates the postal practices of cancelling erroneous markings, mainly with barred "50" in black or red ink, later with other cachets. Due to the French weight progressions being different than in the UK, errors happened quite frequently. In cases of doubt items were reweighed and the underpayment markings were already applied before mail left London for the continent. Letters in this collection bear frankings of up to 9 d. in total, the majority being 4 d., made up of line-engraved and surface printed stamps. The condition is mixed as could be expected. An instructive and varied lot with much interest.
