    French Shipmail 1871 (June 7): Cover from Constantinople to Messina, bearing Bordeaux 80 c. rose 'vif' with fresh colour in a deep shade, large to huge margins all round, tied by Anchor lozenge with octagonal "CONSTANTINOPLE P. FR. U N° 1 7 JUIN 71" datestamp (Salles 882/1 = RR) and framed PD in black as well as oval FRANCO handstamp in blue alongside. Reverse with MESSINA arrival (June 19) cds. A superb franking on a sound cover, sent with the steamer 'Ebre' to France, correctly franked in the double rate to Italy. Signed A. Diena & Calves.

    French Post Offices in Tunesia 1867 (March 9): Cover from Tunis to Marseille, bearing Napoléon perf. 40 c. orange showing a very intense print, a fresh example tied by light Gros Chiffres '5107' numeral lozenge. Cogwheel "TUNIS 9 MARS 67" despatch cds as well as framed PD and Shipmail's "TUNIS-PAR BÔNE ALGERIE 10 MARS 67" cds, both in red alongside. Reverse with arrival cds (March 15). An attractive item, the franking paying correctly the 40 centimes single January 1866 rate from the French offices in Tunesia via Algeria to mainland France. Signed Lamy.

    Lot# : 6233 French Levant

    French Shipmail in the Levant 1858 (March 18): Cover from Constantinople to Milano, then under Austrian rule, bearing Napoléon imperf. 20 c. blue type I and 80 c. carmine, two fine adhesives with fresh colour, tied by light Anchor lozenge in black. Circular GANGE ship cds and framed PD, both in black alongside, both struck on the vessel on its way to the west. Upon arrival in Genova, three-line "PIROSCAFI POSTALI FRANCESI" and "N.A.", both in red were struck to the obverse. Reverse with GENOVA transit (March 26) and Austrian MILANO arrival (March 27) cds's as well as framed "PORTA LETTERE 1. DISTRIBUZIONE" in black. Vertical file fold behind the ship cds, stabilized with hinges, nevertheless an attractive item, the franking paying the 1 franc single rate from the Levant to Lombardy, the cover made its journey on board of the steamer 'Gange'.     French Post Offices in the Levant, Egypt 1864 (May 19): Cover from Alexandria to Marseille, bearing Napoléon perf. 10 c. bistre and 40 c. orange, two fine examples with fresh and deep colour, tied by Gros Chiffres '5080' lozenge with matching "ALEXANDRIE EGYPTE" despatch cds and framed "P.P." in black alongside. Reverse with PARIS transit (May 27) and MARSEILLE arrival (May 28) cds's indicating transport with a British vessel. A sound cover of great attractiveness, correctly franked in the 50 c. Levant rate of January 1857.

    French Post Offices in the Levant 1864 (Nov. 9): Cover from Constantinople to Genova, bearing Napoléon laureated 40 c. orange and 10 c. bistre in a horizontal strip of four, fresh and fine adhesives, tied by clear Gros Chiffres '5083' and matching crisp "CONSTANTINOPLE TURQUIE 9 NOV 64" cds. Framed PD and "PIROSCAFI POSTALI FRANCESI" handstamp, both in red alongside. Reverse with indistinct arrival cds. An exceptional franking to pay correctly the double 40 c. Levant to Italy rate.

    French Shipmail in the Levant 1872 (Jan 24): Cover from Bursa, despatched at Constantinople and directed to Lyon, bearing Napoléon laureated 80 c. rose, a fine adhesive with fresh colour, tied by clear Anchor lozenge in blue. Octagonal "CONSTANTINOPLE PAQ. FR. U no. 4 24 JANV. 72" shipmail' datestamp and framed PD, both in the same blue shade as well as framed "PAQUEBOTS DE LA MEDITERRANÉE" in red alongside. Reverse with MARSEILLE transit (Jan 31) and LYON arrival (Feb 1) cds's in black. Horizontal file fold well away from the franking and postmarks, nevertheless an attractive item, the franking paying the 80 c. rate from a French P.O. in the Levant to France in the tariff of September 1871, the cover made its journey on board of the steamer 'Tanais'.

    Lot# : 6237 French Levant

    French Post Offices in the Levant, Syria 1872 (July 24): Cover from Aleppo via Alexandrette to London, which made its way from Aleppo to Alexandrette / Iskenderun with a courrier outside the postal service. In Alexandrette a horizontal pair of Napoléon laureated 30 c. light-brown were added to the obverse, fresh and fine adhesives, tied by clear Gros Chiffres '5079'. A matching clear "ALEXANDRETTE SYRIE 24 JUIL 72" despatch cds, framed PD in black and "LONDON E.C. PAID 7 AU 72" arrival cds in red alongside. Reverse with BEYROUTH and PARIS transit cds's and a Paris - Calais ambulant cds. An attractive cover showing the 60 c. rate to an astonishingly rare destination.rnNote: Cover sent from the Swiss merchant Streiff & Zollinger in Aleppo to the British merchant with roots in Schaffhausen, Switzerland, Johann Conrad Im Thurn (1809-1882).

Reverse with "MARSEILLE - LYON SPECIAL" ambulant and arrival (June 13) cds's. A fine Levant cover.

    French Post Offices in the Levant, Egypt 1874 (May 30): Envelope from Minie via Alexandria to Paris, bearing Cérès 80 c. rose in a combination franking with Egypt 1 pi. rose red (Gi 31), two fine and fresh examples. Upon despatch in Minie the Egyptian adhesive was tied by "POSTE VICE-REALI EGIZIANE MINIE 30 MAG 74" cds with an information strike alongside. The French definitive was toed by a Gros Chiffres '5080' numeral lozenge with "ALEXANDRIE EGYPTE 1 JUIN 74" despatch cds and framed PD in red alongside. Reverse with "POSTE EGIZIANE CAIRO" and "POSTE EGIZIANE ALESSANDRIA" transit (May 30) as well as indistinct Paris arrival cds's. Cover with some wrinkles, nevertheless an appealing combination cover from a small Egytian office, signed Calves.

    French Offices in the Levant, Egypt 1875 (March 7): Triple rate Cover from Alexandria to Lyon, endorsed with a private "VIA BRINDISI" handstamp in blue and bearing horizontal strip of three Cérès 80 c. rose, tied by clear Gros Chiffres "5080" numeral lozenge, "PAQ. ANGL. ALEXANDRIE 7 MARS 75" despatch cds in black, framed PD and French "PAQ. ANGL. V BRIND. A MOD. 14 MARS 75" entry cds, both in red alongside. Some edge wear, nevertheless an appealing cover from the French PO in Alexandria which made its way with a British vessel to Brindisi, from there with the Italian and French railway system.
