Guatemala

Catalogue 279: South & Central America – The Brian Moorhouse Estate (part IV)
Sort list :
  • Lot# : 5251 Guatemala

1871 (March 1): Proof in blue for the 1 c. value, margins just clear to large on three sides, printed on soft wove paper. Horizontally creased and slightly rubbed, without gum. Rare - not mentioned in Goodman but the Castilejo collection boasted a block of twelve suggesting one sheet was printed only: however the lack of this Proof in major collections suggests the contrary.
    Starting bid : 200 CHF
    Hammer price : 420 CHF

    Lot# : 5252 Guatemala

1871 (March 1): 1 c. ochre on buff, an unused block of forty (8 x 5) from the upper right corner of the sheet with oval 'Controlé / T.P.' handstamp in blue in sheet margin, positions 3-10 / 43-50 with central guide line cross above position 5, fresh and very fine, large part or unmounted og.  A scarce multiple.rnrnNote: The Guatemalan first issue engraved by Joubert was slightly larger than the current French Cérès stamps. By using this perf. 13 x 13½ machine, the margins between the stamps had to be very narrow (1 mm.), therefore the machine inevitably cut into the sides of the stamps. The stamps were printed in sheets of 300 in two panes (10 x 15) separated by a central vertical gutter margin.
    Starting bid : 150 CHF
    Hammer price : not sold

    Lot# : 5253 Guatemala

1871 (March 1): 1 c. ochre in a deep shade, an imperforate unused block of forty from top right of sheet, with full sheet margins and centre line "+" at top, oval "Contrôle / T.P." in blue at upper right. Superb and fresh with just one tone spot not affecting the appearance, mounted in margins only, stamps unmounted og. A delightful and rare multiple.

    Lot# : 5254 Guatemala

1871 (March 1): 1 c. ochre on buff, an unused block of fifty (10 x 5) from the top of the sheet of 150 subjects, positions 1-10 / 41-50, completely Imperforate, showing the perforation guide "+" over the fifth stamp and oval framed "Contrôle / T.P." handstamp in blue at upper right. Unused without gum, central file fold does not detract from the appearance of a delightful multiple Gi 1a = £ 175+/Scott = $ 250+.

    Lot# : 5255 Guatemala

1871 (March 1): 5 c. brown on buff, an unused block of four from the top right of sheet, position 9-10 / 19-20, in a rich shade, the upper pair showing the tête-bêche variety, with large sheet margin on two sides and thus confirming the position (the variety also occurs on pos. 103), fresh and very fine, superb large part og. with the tête-bêche pair unmounted og. A fine and rare multiple Gi 2a = £ 250+/Scott = $ 350+.
