1866: 2 para red-lilac-brown on lilac grey paper, second printing, the fine used example, just shaved at right, on complete front page of the Bosnian Newspaper 'Bosanski Vjestnik', printed in Sarajevo and dated 13th August 1866; tied by framed "NAPLACENO" handstamp in black as used at the Karantin (Quarantine) Racanska Post Office. "The greatest surviving rarity of the issue" to quote Mirko Rasic ('The Postal History and Postage Stamps of Serbia', Collectors Club of New York, 1979). Note: The adhesive was issued to be applied to Newspapers entering the country for onward transmission in Serbia and this item has proved to be contentious in recent years for the sole reason that the town of Raca was not supplied with Newspaper Stamps of this issue. Mail from Bosnia had been sent via Raca since 1852 and it seems spurious to expect Mail Routes to change solely when this Newspaper was posted and then revert back to the same route afterwards. Indeed, further examples of this stamp off cover have been reported and certified by various experts with this exact cancellation, the Naplaceno handstamp from Raca differs from all other Serbian Naplaceno handstamps both in size (37 x 10.5 mm) and in it's distinctive lettering. With the above item is an off-cover example of the 1st printing, position 10 on the sheet of 12 subjects, cancelled at the Belgrade Post Office for comparison, also an extremely rare usage in it's own right. It is the opinion of this describer that anyone in the 1920's wishing to create this rarity, as has been suggested, would perhaps have used a more attractive example of the adhesive, possibly with larger margins at right, stamps with large margins were, at the time eminently more sellable than covers. The inking of the cancellation is consistent with the impression as applied to a Newspaper and indeed there is some spotting from the ink on the adhesive at upper left. There is also a small part of a grey-green piece of the wrapper band at the top edge of the Newspaper to the left of the adhesive. However, the item concerned is sold "as is / tel quel" without grounds for return under our normal Corinphila guarantee. Provenance: Alphonse de Rothschild, John Boker Jr., J. J.
