    1868 (Jan 5): Great Britain 1865 6 d. lilac pl. 6, two horizontal strips of four lettered IA-ID and JA-JD, on 1868 cover from Caldera to London cancelled by five strikes of the "C37" obliterator with 'Caldera' despatch cds below (Jan 5) with faint London arrival cds (Feb 17) also on obverse. One strip originally applied around the edge of the cover and sensibly opened for better Exhibit display. Ink manuscript on reverse 'see Stanley Gibbons 1917, page 52 no Z845'. A remarkable and rare franking, without doubt the largest recorded usage of the 6d. value from Caldera.rnProvenance: Harmers, London, 15 April 1998, lot 899.

    1874 (May 5): Great Britain 1867 9 d. straw pl. 4, a used horizontal pair with perfs. trimmed at right, on 1874 cover from Caldera to Plymouth tied by bold strike of the "C37" obliterator with single ring 'Caldera' datestamp adjacent (May 5) both struck in blue. Reverse with one side flap missing but complete British P.O. 'Callao' cds (May 13) in black and Plymouth arrival cds (June 12).     1875 (Sept 18): Great Britain 1867 10 d. red-brown and 1873 1 s. green pl. 11 used on 1875 cover from Caldera to Genova, Italy tied by bold strike of "C37" obliterator with 'Caldera' cds (Sept 18) below, both struck in blue. 'London / Paid' transit cds (Oct 30) in red alongside and reverse with Genova arrival cds (Nov 2) in black.     1871 (Aug): Great Britain 1864 1 d. red pl. 85, an astonishing eighteen examples, four singles and two strips of seven, used on 1871 cover from Coquimbo to Tunbridge Wells, Kent for the 1/6d. rate, endorsed 'via Panama & West Indian Mail', cancelled by nine strikes of the "C40" obliterator in black. 'Coquimbo' cds (Aug), British P.O. 'Callao' transit cds (Aug 26), London red cds and Tunbridge Wells arrival (Sept 30) all on reverse with notation by sender "Nothing but Penny and Twopenny Stamps on the Coast". Heavy vertical crease and some adhesives with imperfections but this is of no great significance as Stanley Gibbons list but do not price any 1 d. red issue used in Coquimbo. Reverse with British P.O. 'Callao' transit cds (Oct 27) and Sutton arrival cds (Nov 28) in black.     1868 (Dec 3): Small envelope mailed at British P.O. to France struck with fine "♚ / PAID / AT / VALPARAISO." (with stop) in red in lieu of stamps due to size of envelope, prepaid '1/7d.' in manuscript red ink. Double arc 'Valparaiso' cds on reverse (Dec 3) in black. 'London / Paid' transit cds (Jan 13, 1869) and oval 'PD' applied and thence via Cherbourg and the cover redirected to the Naval addressee in Toulon.     1878 (Feb 13): Great Britain 1870 1½ d. lake-red pl. 3, a strip of eight lettered CA-CH, used on 1878 cover from Valparaiso to Plymouth endorsed 'via Straits' (of Magellan) tied by six strikes of the "C30" obliterator with 'Valparaiso' cds of despatch (Feb 13) below. Reverse with Plymouth arrival cds (March 27) in black. The last stamp folded over the edge of the cover and the first somewhat blunted at left but a most unusual make up for the 1 shilling rate and an attractive Southbound cover from this Office. Cert.     1881 (Feb 12): Great Britain 1870 1½ d. lake-red pl. 3 used with 1880 1 s. orange-brown pl. 13 on 1881 cover from Valparaiso to Paris endorsed 'via Panama', the 1½ d. lightly tied (and cancelled by Calais transit to prevent re-use), the 1 shilling superbly tied by "C30" obliterator with 'Valparaiso' cds alongside (Feb 12) in black. Reverse with London cds in red (March 30) and Paris arrival. Fresh and very fine, a rare usage: the following month Chile joined the UPU and British stamps ceased to be sold in Chile.

    1874 (Dec 16): Chile 1867 5 c. orange-red (Scott 17) cancelled by segmented cork handstamp in black and paying the local rate, used on combination cover with Great Britain 1858/69 2 d. blue pl. 14, 1865 4 d. vermilion pl. 13 in a horizontal pair and 1873 1 s. green pl. 9 and mailed to Milano, Italy; tied by "C30" obliterator and by "VALPARAISO / PAID / C35" duplex (Dec 16) in black. 'London / Paid' transit cds (Jan 17, 1875) in red also ties the 2 d. adhesive and the oval 'PD' in red ties the Chilean 5 cent. A spectacular and beautiful cover for the connoisseur. Cert.     1875 (June 2): Great Britain 1867 3 d. rose pl. 12, two examples, 1865 4 d. vermilion pl. 11 and 1867 2 s. blue all used on 1875 mourning envelope sent registered from Valparaiso to the care of the Italian Consulate in Sydney, New South Wales endorsed 'via San Francisco' but this deleted and replaced with 'Brindisi', the adhesives tied by two strikes of the "VALPARAISO / C30" duplex (June 2) with two strikes of Valparaiso straight line REGISTERED in black. 'Registered / London' transit in red (July 17) and reverse with Sydney arrival (Sept 11). One 3 d. originally applied around the edge of the envelope but full of character, a delightful and very rare usage. Cert.     1874 (May 2): Great Britain 1873 1 s. green pl. 8, a single example used on 1874 mourning cover from Valparaiso to the German Consul in Caracas, Venezuela endorsed 'via Panama' tied by "C30" obliterator in black with 'Valparaiso' despatch cds (May 2) alongside. Found to be double weight as fully prepaid for single tariff, and struck with "INSUFFICIENTLY / + / PREPAID" in red. Three line dated PANAMA / TRANSIT in black (May 20) on front and reverse with 'St. Thomas' cds (May 28) where struck with "No. (5069) / DETAINED FOR POSTAGE (1/-)" with bracketed figures in manuscript. Presumably paid and sent on to Caracas. Some unsurprising edge wear to envelope, a most unusual cover.rnNote: The German Consul Erwin Stammann was a great critic of the Venezuelan President Guzman Blanco, calling him a despot and megalomaniac and Venezuela a “pitiful mestizo state”.
