Lot# : 30363 Victoria
Typographed from electrotypes by Samuel Calvert 1857: Emblems 2 d. grey-lilac, no wmk., rouletted 18-19, an unused horizontal pair of outstanding centering for this Trial issue and of lovely colour, minor ironed bend on right hand stamp and surface spot on left stamp mentioned for accuracy only, unused without gum. An exceptional and extremely rare pair - one block of six was discovered (1893) and of these, one stamp is now housed in the collection of His Majesty King Charlöes III. The six stamps are believed to be the sole recorded examples - this pair being the largest multiple extant and the finer of the two known - the other having pinholes where, it is believed, the stamps were adjoined to a document thought to be a submission by Samuel Calvert for consideration of this method of separation. Illustrated in "The Stamps of Victoria" by Geoff Kellow RDP on colour plate 8. Delightful and a great rarity of the Emblems issue. Certs.
