    1846 (Jan 21/Feb 17): Entire letter from Melbourne to the Naval & Military Gazette in London, endorsed "per first Ship to England", prepaid '3d.' in red manuscript for local rate and charged '8d.' due in manuscript for incoming Ship Letter on arrival. Reverse with oval "MELBOURNE / ♛ / PORT PHILLIP" datestamp (Feb 19), London SHIP-LETTER in black and arrival cds (June 29). Interesting content "We are very anxious for accounts from New Zealand, Col. Defsard had advanced with 700 men of the 58th - 96th accompanied by the Governor....Sir E. Wilmot has formed a new Council and Van D. Land is quieter...Major Cotton has begun to form works for supplying Hobart Town with water....a Mr. Beauvais, Master of the Barque "Kestrel" is to be tried this week for murdering several of his Lascar crew...17 Feby. The New Zealand Chiefs have given in and have surrendered, a grand fight took place on the 11th Jany. when the natives were well thrashed". (this last refers to Kororareka).
